My name is Mr. Yuyama Kunihiko and I am the director of the ”Pocket Monsters” animation series.

I am very happy that many of you are fan of ”Pocket Monsters”. But: please understand that it is an animation for children, and trying to please adult ”Pocket Monsters” fans is bad for the creative process. For example: In the movie ”The Extreme Speed Genesect and the Awakening of Mewtwo”, using the Mewtwo created by Mr. Shudo Takeshi instead of my Mewtwo would have made the movie very boring and not profitable.

Please understand. You may enjoy a show for children, but the show is not for you.

I know this is b8, but Yuyama has always been very vocal about how he wants the Pokemon movies to be enjoyable for all ages, not just children.

It was Yuyama. Shudo just threw bitchfests on his personal blog about how other writers didn't like his shitty ideas after he got fired, going on about how his headcanon was the only truth.

Read any of the pre-movie interviews with Yuyama, he's always going on about how he wants entire families to go see them and enjoy them together. He treats them as family movies, not children's movies.

also, there's 17 movies so far. I looked at the 16th movie comments on Dogasu and there's nothing of the sort, so for which movies *does* he state that he's treating them as family movies?

International marketing, probably.
I was 14 when the show started here, and my entire high school was incredibly into it. It wasn't seen as "just for children" back then.

It's mostly in the west Pokémon is deemed "for children", but seeing as the anime doesn't have too many adult themes in it some might deem it too child-friendly in Japan.

The irony is that international marketing seems to now be downplaying the anime for that very reason.

Another issue is how the show hasn't grown up with its audience, unlike the games - it seems like it's kept the same "appeal to the children, keep the parents entertained" stigma that it's started out with and which 4Kids loved getting rid of rather than evolving to "appeal to the children, keep the parents entertained, and appeal to older fans' nostalgia".

Apparently he didn't say it for that one, yeah.

Note how they get all these celebrities to play roles and sing songs, etc. They're not doing that for children. 8 year old Japanese kids don't know who Reiko Takashima and Yoshiko Mita are, and those actors aren't cheap.

So this is what it seems like - is Yuyama only trying to appeal to these two demographics:

while leaving out the teens/adults obsessed with Pokémon (the type to complain about Femtwo, Gen I and continuity), who are what Origins is for?

Actually, that's a good thing. The west has this odd idea of how anime is viewed in Japan, but the thing is... it's not this "cool thing" normal people watch. Anime is either for little kids (Pokemon, Naruto, etc) or for creepy asocial nerds (everything else). There's the odd series (Sazae-san and Chibi Maruko-chan) that's treated in the "doesn't really count as a cartoon" way similar to how The Simpsons is seen here, and One Piece is this weird outlier that it's ok to still be into because everyone and their dog grew up on it and it's still running, but as a whole, Akira Average-san would rather admit to having a collection of scat porn than to be watching late-night anime.

Origins was specifically said to be primarily aimed at people in their mid-to-late 20s who played Gen 1 as kids and then fell off the franchise. It gave them a nostalgic adaptation of the one game they were familiar with from their childhood, then showed off some cool shit from gen 6 to make them interested in maybe buying X/Y and getting into the franchise again.

That's just a really loud but really small minority, so it's in everyone's best interest to ignore those.

As I said, the primary audience for Origins weren't Pokemon fans. They didn't watch the anime, they didn't play the game, they didn't know shit about the franchise post-Gen 1. They were fans 15 years ago, and Origins adapted the one thing they were familiar with in an attempt to make them fans again

This is also why the genwunners bitching about the Mega promotion in it completely miss the point. That promotion of "cool shit from gen 6 you should buy gen 6 and check out yourself" is the only reason the special was made at all.
