only way i can see that happening is if they actually let you progress, even if you lost the battle.
I mean, the way things are now, you'll always win eventually, and that' doesn't make them seem like rivals

You're challenged by someone that has only three pokes, and you only get to use three too.
when you or your opponents poke is switched, both are switched, and can't be reused.
At the end of the battle they count which lost the most, if you lost you won't be knocked out, so it could work.
