Its just the selection of Pokemon. There is literally one fire type besides the starter and that's pretty much it. Platinum was fucking perfect.

Game design was fine. I really enjoyed Plat ingame, not because of the changes but because it moved at a pace faster than a snail.

Coming from Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, which had a fast surf speed but lots of water routes, to Diamond and Pearl, which had a lot fewer water routes but a really slow surf speed
Slower battles showcased things like better battle animations over Ruby and Sapphire but battles tended to drag on
The entire Elite Four was a mess. Both of the Hoenn early route bugs, Calm Mind Bronzong with physical attacks, Flint's entire team
There were new Pokemon you weren't even able to collect until after the main game's completion, and one was even locked out if you didn't transfer up from Gen 3 games (Tangrowth)

I like them. Slow at first but more immersing that gens 5 or 6, once I'm into a playthrough I play it solidly for a few days. I know Plat's better, but it can be kind of fun and challenging trudging along with Kricketune and shit. Yeah, everyone else hates them though, fair enough really.

the regional dex itself isn't that small (150), but it's lacking in certain types which makes for really stupid "electric" and "fire" trainers. gen 4 also didn't introduce that many pokemon, which is heavily exacerbated by so many of them being legendaries and old gen evolutions, most of said evolutions not being in DP's main game. as such you don't really have that much new stuff to use. also, the rival is ass until the end, being strangely underleveled and not evolving his shit (i think he has a level 27 starly at some point). platinum fixes all these, so people pretty much don't bother defending DP anymore since there's a superior version.

I've watched playthroughs which is as far as i've gone into that shithole and the tediousness of it in a lot of areas, the awful designs of gen 4 pokemon and how shit the gym leaders are is more than enough to not go into it. And before you tell me to play Platinum, it fixes one problem, that's not enough.

There wasn't really one in RSE but if you're talking about GSC then you're delusional to no end. Despite you being lower level than any game so far it still somehow manages to have backwards level progression, in part due to the shitty wild pokemon and trainer levels.

Yeah, I started with Red but Gold was what I would consider my childhood game, and I can't stand HGSS, even with Drayano's Sacred Gold hack to balance things out. The music irritates me so fucking much. It sounds like they only expected you to hear individual songs only once, so they gave them extravagant intros which sound stupid and kill any sort of momentum. There's also the team rocket battle theme, which comes to a screeching halt for no reason for one note, killing the energy the theme had built up until then. There's also the menu sounds, which sound like I'm playing Super Adventure Island on the SNES.

It's just not as good of a game as people like to believe.

Level 20 wild pokemon when you are around level 50 sure sounds like no level curve problem.
I had to trade mons to plat to grind them there. It took me 15 minutes to grind up mon to decent level in HGSS it would take ages even with Mt Silver unlocked

I just finished a Pearl playthrough, and here's the issues I had (compared to Platinum):
-Lack of mons
-Couldn't find Heart Scales anywhere
-Entire story was shit (Platinum fixed the story, still not my favourite though)
-Shit teams on leaders and E4
-Aftergame is meh at best
-Super fucking slow in every aspect

This is why I love Platinum. They had a great foundation and wonderful ideas, but so many things added up to make D/P inferior to every other Pokemon game. Platinum fixed everything and as a result it's one of the best, if not the best, in the series.

Yeah, I know why they've done it, but that doesn't change the fact that it's an issue. Being more opened up as a map is enjoyable but it comes at a Pryce (pun, I should think of titles for the dub, huh?). Less than level 31 tops for the second to last gym leader would be stupid, I think.

Very slow game. Like very slow. It took fucking forever to do anything which was just boring.

There were very few good or memorable pokemon as well. A lot of bad designs.

DPPt were the only games I never finished. I finished red, blue, yellow, gold, silver, crystal, ruby, sapphire, emerald, firered, leafgreen, HG, SS, black, white, black2, white2, x, and y. But not diamond pearl or platinum. God awful.

Honest answer? Timing. This was during the point in time a lot of people were less interested in Pokémon. It wasn't a strong enough jump from the last generation and this was where the common complaints about the designs truly started.

Oh sure the go to examples are Unova Pokémon but the "overdesigned" and "Digimon" comments started here. Then HGSS came out with improvements to the mechanics AND nostalgia so it was what we remember Gen IV for.

Why are there still level <level 30 pokemon at the 8th gym? GF could have pushed the levels up so you weren't fighting level 20 pokemon for a better part of the game and in Kanto.

Misty's badge is the one that lets you use cut, it's entirely possible to skip Surge and get Koga's badge as the third one, then use surf to get to Cinnabar.

Wrong. Diamond and Pearl reinvigorated the franchise and are the third highest selling pair of games in the series. Adding HGSS and Platinum to the mix makes them the second most successful generation behind gen 1.

Holding B down doesn't matter in the argument that was originally made. The run speed is exactly the same between the two whether you have to rest your finger on the button or not.

I find it weird that people always whine about pointless things like the game speed or something like that. I recently replayed Pearl and it wasn't that slow, at least it didn't bother me. For me, the #1 reason why D/P are the worst main games is because the selection of Pokemon is absolutely horrendous. There are very few decent Pokemon early in the game so unless you want to use shitmons, you really don't have much choice. I always struggle to come up with a decent team in these games. Here are pretty much the only good Pokemon that can be caught early in Pearl:

>Staraptor
>Crobat
>Gastrodon
>Floatzel
>Gyaraods
>Medicham

Yeah, three of them are Water-type so good luck with balance. What else can you even catch in Pearl?

>Bibarel, shitmon and another Water-type
>Luxray, shitmon with no moves
>Bronzong, defensive so it's no use in-game and a pain in the ass to evolve from Bronzor
>Roserade, limited movepool and not very good
>Mismagius, very limited movepool and dead weight until you get Shadow Ball
>All the early-game Bugs like Kricketune, Dustox, Beautifly, shitmons
>Sudowoodo, weak to everything and slow
>Rapidash, doesn't learn Flame Wheel in D/P so dead weight until level 60-something when it learns Flare Blitz

And out of those two versions, Pearl is definitely the worse since at least you can find Honchkrow and Skuntank is Diamond, both of which are decent Pokemon. However, no other Pokemon games suffer from this bad case of "you can only find shit early in the game so good luck with your team".

Training Bronzor in Gen IV is the absolute most tedious thing you can imagine because its mighty 24/24 dual offenses can't defeat anything so you basically have to babysit it with Exp. Share all the way to level 33 if you want it to have any kind of use. On the other hand, it has over three times more bulk but you're telling me that it isn't defensive?

My friend had Diamond which he couldn't be arsed to finish so I asked him to give it to me because I thought it would be nice to replay the game and get to use some new mons.

Holy shit. Three gyms was all I was able to handle before I rage quit that piece of shit. The Pokemon selection is fucking terrible. For me it was the thing that ruined it for me. The slow as shit pace was really annoying too. What a piece of shits those games are, but Platinum was amazing.

Also you know the dex is trash when the Fire-type Elite 4 member has... 2/5 fire types; the Electric Gym leader has an OCTILLERY and the Ice Gym leader has a Medicham.

Platinum fixed this insanity and is easily the biggest step up in a 3rd installment of any of the 3rd installments. D/P are only better than G/S/C; which is bad because Jhoto itself is a complete joke of a region due to them putting a half-baked Kanto in too.

Honestly, my least favorite is Gen V. I said this in another thread but they feel more like side-games than they do mainstream games.

I don't mind a little change of pace in the games, but Gen V felt misaimed and absolutely unnecessary.

At least D/P/P were able to step shit up and make a villain who was truly evil, but not moustache-twirlingly so. He was dark, menacing, and well-suited for a cult leader. The Pokemon were great, particularly the starters (except the penguin, everyone I talked to who used it said it was shit in battle). Few Fire-types, point against it there, but Infernape was really all I needed. The region's Legendary Trio were integral to the plot, as were Diagla and Palkia (and, in Platinum, Giratina).
As someone who loved Emerald, I feel it was a huge step up (as was X/Y from Diamond/Pearl). But Black and White just don't do it for me.

I really liked them when they first came out and they were the first games I bought in Japanese after learning the language for about 2-3 years.

I had good memories of it, but most likely it's mainly the thrill of being able to understand moonrunes overshadowing most of the faults the game had.

That said it was impossible not to notice the slow surfing speeds, or the lack of fire types.

Well, there's three places in BW2 that are different.

Black City/White Forest is the biggest difference but I've heard you can change those if yu have friends

Hey, maybe nobody will give a fuck, but i am a fan from the start, and played all main games, except diamond and pearl. red->gold&silver->crystal->ruby&sapphire->emerald->white->black2->platinum.
Weird, right? I was expecting a shit from platinum, but i am happy i was wrong. It is hard to tell if it is magnum opus of game freak, but it is for sure very decent title, music is very nice, and setting itself is cool, not the best, but definitely not the worst. I cant tell which pokemon game is the best, because every is unique.
