Really, it just fixed most of DP's problems. The game was a bit faster and it had a pretty good regional dex.
I felt it was the most consistently challenging game too. The game tossed shit at you like Mars Purugly fairly early on, and some of the Ace trainer double battles were pretty good. And of course you can't forget the E4 and Cynthia.
I also liked how Sinnoh was laid out. Being essentially split in two because of Mt. Coronet meant you had to pass through little sections of it throughout the game. I thought it was cool slowly seeing parts of Mt. Coronet until you finally get to scale the damn thing at the climax. It was also a nice touch how the region became more cold as you went further north toward Snowpoint City.
I really loved the music too. All the piano made the tracks feel laid back, with some places like Veilstone and Jubilife even having a jazz sound to them. My favorite example is probably the music that plays outside the Pokemon League building.
Then there's tons of postgame shit to do as well. Catching all the legends, Battle frontier, exploring Northeast Sinnoh, wasting cash on your Resort Villa, finishing off Team Galactic, etc.
There was a bunch of other subtle features added like the colder climate, Distortion World and high level Magikarp fishing along with other things I'm probably forgetting. I guess in my opinion Platinum just feels like the most "complete" Pokemon game.
I hope you respect my opinion.
