Now, we know nowadays they were most probably only gullible people, but there was no faith, they had proofs, evidence, God was real for them. This didn't make the Christian religion any less religious.
Let's pretend in this exact moment God decides to reveal to the world because why not (for this hipotesis we are assuming exists, and according to Christian parameters). Like, he is the stereotypical big bearded old man in the skies, and he also does miracles people ask him to do to prove he is actually God. The fact God actually exists as a matter of fact doesn't make christianity a non-religion. They are theists, believe in a superior being who created the universe. Faith is only needed by religions in case facts can't explain something, but could be replaced by the actual truth if it happened to coincide with their (since then) "beliefs"
