the story goes that your some normal elementary kid in nipponland and you free this spirit that gives you a watch that allows you to see folklore monsters and you guys go on various hijinks together.
It has fun gameplay, some say it's better than pokemon because it's more engaging but I personally like both.
but the bad thing about youkai watch is that there's only a few out of the 200 youkais that have good designs/are shitmons. This usually leads to 'how the fuck did this game get so popular'

It's probably in part because of all the japanese folklore stuff for why it got so popular

I have the first but never finished it because I don't actually know moonrunes and I felt it was one of those games you have to know what's going on script-wise to fully enjoy unlike other Level-5 games where I felt like I wasn't missing out on much just playing the game

but I'm worried about the sequel because it seems to be pandering the anime alot. I don't hate the anime, but I wish it would be more like the first game where it didn't have alot of LOL FARTS XDDD and cramming Jibanyan everywhere

Yeah, some parts the debut trailer you posted does makes it seem like they're really trying to be more like the anime than what I got out of the first game

Inazuma Eleven and Danball Senki kind of did that with the animated cutscenes changing mid-series from a more distinct style to being more like the anime visuals on a better budget, but the games otherwise felt constant

I can get the pandering to the anime because it tends to be as/more popular than the game. I haven't played any other level 5 game other than layton. Also youkai watch is getting a movie and from the commercials I'm guessing it's going to follow 2's plot.

I didn't get very far as said before I stopped, since I don't have any real Japanese knowledge. I might try picking it up again for the gameplay but knowing Level-5 is already considering localizing the games "in a big way" and the anime's already been picked up for dubbing I might just wait and see what happens with that

And really, a movie already? That's kinda surprising

I'm curious to see what happens to that. I don't know if kids now a days are interested in Japan. I think if it's "in a big way" they're going to change the setting from Japan to America. I think they're still going to keep the japanese folklore monsters.

That's one way of seeing it, when I heard "in a big way" I figured like a 90's Pokemon level advertising push with a big publisher backing them, probably Nintendo.

Either way, that does make me wonder exactly how they will handle that. All we really know is that it's going to be called "Yo-Kai Watch" overseas.

Dentsu USA apparently picked up the license with a forecast of it beginning to air next Spring, but with how them picking up Danball Senki turned out it could end up like Spring 2016

but to be fair, level 5 are a bunch of jews. In the sequel there's DLC pokemon and also you have to get both version of the games to unlock a secret dungeon. It's total bullshit

I hate when they pull that bullshit, every Inazuma Eleven after the first does that where you have to link both versions to fight a team of each of the two version specific post-game teams mixed up. Usually you can ignore it and not miss out on too much, but the fourth game locked a ton of post-game shit behind its mixed team.

The DLC is probably free, at least if their past games are any sign, which had a ton of free DLC distributed along the year after release, I think the first YW had that too. Though I think they are trying to kinda do that Skylanders type thing with the toy Medals and the QR Codes printed on the back

They'll probably keep doing that "link the versions" thing as long as they have two versions though
