They're pretty much a straight upgrade from Rescue Team.

>Every pokemon up to gen 4
>Better story
>Sky has the Special Episodes
>Every pokemon has a little portrait, and not just a couple dozen (Minor but it's nice to have)
>Different pokemon are part of different IQ groups, and they can have every skill active at once, at least the ones they have access to

massive downgrade. the story is now bloated with tons of forced emotional scenes, the post game is awful and you cant even evolve in it anymore, along with a bunch of other really stupid downgrades. the characters are so god damned annoying in the explorer games.
