Normals are good for baton pass sweeping because only 3 types resist/are immune to normal and most normal types can learn ghost and fighting type moves.

The only thing wrong with megas is that the mechanics are kind of fucked and are either worse than having an actual item, or make their base pokemon irrelevant since there's no limits to when and how long you can use it

Kinda takes most of the fun out of a special super form if it's just the normal mode of operation
