He got to bring back a bunch of old mon, battle a bunch of recurring rival characters then got to finish it off by showing that he was better than everyone except a trainer spamming legendary mons. It also helped that DP had this series-long arc completely about Ash overcoming Paul. Yeah it was predictable but still satisfying.
At least ADV/DP was a logical progression though, in ADV he was beaten by someone who went on to become the Champion in a really close match, then in Sinnoh he was beaten by someone who went on to become Champion again, but this time it was someone who swept through the entire region with just one Pokemon. In BW he was beaten by Cameron who got beaten by Virgil in the next match while he still had like 4 Pokemon left, and then Virgil barely won the league even though he was up against a character who was so unimportant that he was just some footnote of Ash beating him in the first tournament of the series. I don't really know what happened during the creation of BW that they could make things seem stupid even down to unimportant details like that.

I'm surprised you have enthusiasm for anything after BW. It is the laundry list of everything that can go wrong in a show. It makes every single flaw in this show stand out more than ever; flaws that have been there since the beginning. I was flipping dense about this for years, but now I see that all they can do is spout junk I've seen several times over. There is nothing that surprises me. Nothing interesting to look forward to. I've already seen it. All of it. Not to mention I've come to despise the thought of a show where one just "waits" for something to happen. I've said for years that the only way this show can end is for Ash to go off to another adventure that never gets told. I never fully grasped the implication of such a statement until now. If you want progression, you're watching the wrong show. I'm convinced what progression we saw was just a flipping coincidence, or at least it can be summed up in one statement per saga. AG just finally let him have more than one full evo. DP near had a full team of full evos, and saw them actually using the type chart correctly for a change. Both of which are things they should've been doing since the beginning. Not to mention in both of these instances, it was only because they had someone else to pawn all the cute pokemon onto, and well...I can't argue too well about DP since making decent antagonists was the best thing they've ever done. XY literally has nothing going for it. I tried, but no, I cannot support this. I do realize that they cannot just do DP again, and I don't expect them to. Then again, for me, the primary flaw in the show is the premise itself. True, it's the same premise that's in the games, but I don't like that premise, either. It works for a game, but it makes no sense as a story.

I guess my reasoning is that I find a lot of other peoples' reasoning here to be faulty, even for themselves. They are seeking something even though they know it's not going to happen or it just isn't true, or I'm operating under the assumption that they should've reached that conclusion.
