1) Scrap OU
2) Play UU with pokemon that you like/are decent.
3) Check their stats/movepool to see possible move sets/EVs
4) Test them out by playing

I can beat KangArtist, wanna know why? Because i'm fully prepared because everyone used to run it. Just like Kangaskhan centred teams, it's still bullshit but everyone runs 2 intimidate users, rocky helmet, will-o-wisp, and fighting types. Smogon goes the easy way and bans everything.

Real advice here.

Go here: http://www.smogon.com/forums/forums/xy-ou-teams.261/
Look at teams you think you might like, read the reasoning behind certain choices and how they play, read comments on it to see whether it's actually good or not, and use that until you get your bearings. Switch things out, change moves where you feel it's necessary, and adapt it to your playstyle. Don't get used to copying teams and try to learn to teambuild yourself, but don't feel bad about using a well-explained team until you understand the metagame.

I'm the guy that constantly says "UUfag here". I love UU, but I would never tell people that you can use whatever you want there. I still have to tell people that Sceptile is terrible in UU to this day.

Why bother? Let them use it and lose. Either they'll learn their lesson or they'll keep sucking forever, but it doesn't hurt you regardless.
Plus you know how some people are, they'll use their one fave if it kills them. I used to play Crobat in OU in 4th gen lol
