Demons Souls and Dark Souls are great BECAUSE the developers weren't pandering to the "omg so hard" hype. They made a game that required attention to be able to beat. They wanted to make games that were more thoughtful than most other action RPGs. It wasn't unforgiving, it was indifferent to the player.

When DS2 rolled around they had bought the Western hype and marketed it as "that really hard game" and the design reflected that. The world and enemy placement felt more game-y and it just wasn't Dark Souls.

Fuck the hype, fuck the fanbase, fuck the memes.

Haven't played DeS, but in both Dark Souls games the story is kind of shitty on the surface, but read the item descriptions and you get a sense of the world that the games built.

2 has an extremely polished combat system that's probably my favorite in any game I've ever played, but 1 is probably better in every other way. Both are worth playing, but as an anon above said, 2 is more video gamey.
