>>20161903Kanto worked. It was the first, so it didn't have to worry about being too much like anything else, so it felt original and fresh. It felt just-right to me. The music was great, the pokemon were great, the names, the caves; it was all good.
Johto was a rehash. It *did* have to worry about being too similar, and it was not so creative. The names/music/routes/cities all sort of blended together for me (not that there weren't some good things in the mix). I played in it for the first time with soulsilver in 2010, and there were some times where I really enjoyed it, but overall it was meh. Then the pokemon mostly sucked. Worst of all was the absolute shit-tier rival, and the shit-tier reuse of rocket. At least the caves were mostly good.
Hoenn...I dunno. I played it in Emerald last year for the first time. I *did* like the tropical theme and all the water, and the music didn't bother me. I thought it was more creative than Johto, but not as well balanced as Kanto. They put too much stuff in too little space, and it lacked drive. The rival was meh (though the protag designs were very good). The pokemon were good, not great, but good. They all had a theme, which was nice. Team Aqua was a good enemy, but magma was just blegh. I liked Diving. There were times were you just felt like you were really exploring, which was nice.
I've never played Sinnoh, though I've looked it up on several occasions. I kinda want to, but I dunno. The pokemon are largely shit; I think there were about a team's worth that I liked. Cynthia seems awesome. I will most likely play through it some day.
Unova was...a mixed bag. There was some really good stuff in there, and some pretty shit stuff. I resented the PLOT in my face every 50 steps, and I just didn't give two shits for the enemy organization, the rivals, any of that. The towns/cities were mostly good, with a few that sucked. Nascar track = crap.
