the main story should be fine for newcomers, my advice is stick with kalos mons only and turn off exp share.

Don't let anyone tell you how to play the game. Just enjoy it.

EV training in-game is easier to manage post game with Reset Bags, and I wish someone had tol me that. Besides that, just play it as would, at your own pace.

Go on GTS for some mons if you want them. The game is rather easy, and competitive is where it's at anyway. Don't worry about it as gen 5 relevant change was hidden abilities, and that can't be access with our hordes or friend safari which means you won't be seeing them. Take it from someone who last game before Y was Platinum.

Do I unlock the GTS early? Quite like the idea of getting an Espeon somehow, always was my favourite pokemon.

They're complaining because exp share was changed to be a key item you can toggle on or off to share to the whole party.

Personally, I like it because I play Pokemon for features like Amie, contests, the casual stuff. I like having my team of mons healthy and not fainted. Keeping it on keeps my bros rarin' to go.

I regularly get the other starters when I do wondertrade - though Froakie and Charmander are the ones I most commonly see. Eevee is another one that shows up fairly frequently - sometimes even with its Hidden ability (Anticipation)

If you're in the early stages of the game, use scatterbug/spewpa for wondertrade - it's plenty clogged enough with starter route trash, but scatterbug is something that's always appreciated due to its patterns. Anything from the second gym on is fair enough for wondertrade though.

There's so little need for HM use in this game that you can just get an HM slave, unless you really want to put Surf on something. Speaking of which, there are, like five HMs in total.

The first two gyms have a huge gap between them - don't expect that to happen afterwards.

Don't get your hopes up about the local villainous team, or your friendlies. They all suck. Shauna a cute tho.

EXP Share is great, honestly it's super fun item and I'm so happy it's team wide now. But you don't need to keep it on all the time. If you need some levels for some weaker party members, box the strongest ones who dont need any and just use EXP to catch your lowbies up.

You can keep it on all the way but it does make the game incredibly easy. My biggest tip is to take it slow. Don't just pound through the game as fast as possible. Also, when you have grass, run around in it for awhile and see whats in it because you might find stuff you don't expect.

Examples: Wild Eevee early on, first stage Pseudo legionaries like Axew and Larvitar. Just look even if you have 6 mon to carry through the game, thanks to EXP share and super training, you can run through the game with more than 6 Pokemon trained and ready to fight. For me, I used EXP share and swapped around 12 different pokemon.

Even if Pokemon amie isn't your favorite thing, mess around in it eevery now and again. It's fun and is good for a little filler.

Okay. Many thanks for the advice all. Working my way through catching a few early pokemon now, and will stop annoying people with my running commentary!

I'll keep in mind the knowledge about the Exp Share and building a team, and will use wondertrade once I get something semi-decent to trade.

Don't forget -- affection and friendship are NOT the same thing. Affection overrides friendship, so an Eevee with max friendship and two affection hearts (and a fairy type move) will become a Sylveon.

Having to wait so long for Mawilite was excruciating, but that's the only thing I didn't like about XY.

If you're going to catch and train a lot of Pokémon and rotate them between the boxes and your party, Exp Share lets you easily train basically as many Pokémon as you want.

You'll be alright. Chespin turns into a real bro. But just a tip, pick up Fletchling when you can. All cracks about Smogonbird aside, it's a pretty solid Pokemon, and covers both needs for Fire and Flying types. Just avoid Rock-types and you should be alright.

Also this. Eevee shows up just before Geosenge Town, so any Eeveelution you want (besides maybe Leafeon and Glaceon, I think those will take a while to reach) should be available reasonably early.

Ignore the haters, X and Y are great games.

A couple of type changes:
Steel no longer resists dark and ghost attacks so they're a lot easier to deal with.
Fairy type resists fighting, dark and bug, and has replaced the typing of a bunch of normal and psychics who would normally be weak to those moves, plus they are immune to dragon, so watch out for that. Fairy is weak to steel and poison, so now it's worth having one of those attacks on one of your pokemon.
