I may be nitpicking, but I can't be the only one tired of seeing that same boring virtual arena in online battles. I'd rather the game cycle around battle areas.

I was also super bummed about this. There are some AMAZING arenas (Olympia's Gym, Xerneas Battle, Aquacorde Cafe, Lysandre Battle, just the name a few off the top of my head) and we only see them one time ever. It's such a damn waste. We have selectable music, we need selectable arenas.

I can understand how some of them would affect certain moves (Camouflage, Secret Power and Nature Power), but those are outliers and it wouldn't exactly break the meta. Plus, if they include a random option then it could work as a surprise advantage or handicap when using those moves. Otherwise I think it's a great idea to let us pick where we wanna battle. This would also be a nifty feature of Super Secret Bases in ORAS if they let us define what arena is used when our "Gym Leader" is fought. Could add some nice character.

Wow, it's almost as though the online battling portion of the game is just a small side activity, and making multiple arenas for it would be just as necessary as making new backgrounds for Amie, Super Training, or the trading screens.

I think they could just make the arena aesthetic instead of affecting any moves. Have the game behave as if you're still in the virtual default. Sounds easy enough to do.

The fact that it affects certain moves and abilities is the exact reason why you can't choose a different battlefield. Each player would probably want the arena that is most beneficial to their team, and there isn't a good way to compromise on that. Someone might want Power Gem for their Venusaur, but their opponent probably won't want to give up the chance at Hydro Pump with a Heatran. And so on.
Then again, aren't all of those cool one-shot backgrounds inside buildings? Because then there wouldn't actually be any change.

They obviously didn't put as much effort into the competitive battling as the smogonites would've wanted, but then if you guys had your way, the whole game would just be competitive battling and no story.
