Because I don't like doubles. I prefer the mind games that come with singles play. Say what you want about hazards, they're an interesting layer to games that reward good team building to either put pressure on hazard removal or stop it entirely. It allows you to prioritize going on the offensive or using a few turns to get your support mon in to remove hazards.

If I could compare 6v6 to any sport, it would be a series of fencing matches. All that matters is you and your opponent's ability to properly counter and strike the opponent at the right times. I can't say I feel the same way about doubles since there isn't the aspect of catching your opponent off guard since you both have two mons on the field and you can pretty clearly see what's going to happen on any given turn.

So personal preference mostly.

Yeah I play. Australia's entry format is shit tier, losing second round of a single elim top cut ending any shot at worlds is far from rewarding.

eh your odds of getting a worlds invite are about equal to any other place, considering the ratio of players/invites. I mean, if you were really good you'd probably be the only person from your country to get an invite like Randy Kwa from canada

Randy Kwa's a crap comparison because he gets to play in the American circuit which gives you multiple chances to prove yourself (albeit in a larger crowd, yes, but a larger majority of better players will qualify). Sejun Park is the only viable comparison, and he's one of the best players of all time. Australia will have an embarrassing rep at worlds again this season, and it's because without players who will contend for the actual world title, there's a chance we just send trash, which is what's happening 2nd year in a row.

I agree it's not feasible to invite everyone, and I feel we do have probably ~4 world class players (hell, that's how many invites we get). They're just not good enough to ensure qualification through single elimination, since it's so volatile. We would need Sejun class, top 5 in the world tier players, to ensure good players get the invite. 2 players who got invites to worlds I 4-0d in swiss, and I lost unluckily (but lets not blame it on luck here) narrowly to the winner, who got a free-pass to worlds on screen when his opponent made the worst play I've ever seen in a winning condition. The guy that went undefeated in swiss also didn't get invited, nor did I or any of the other 8-1s. Im not even complaining, just kind of explaining the situation. Should get better in future years I guess as the scene develops. As a whole though, Australia is terrible at VGC and is at large a joke among the community.

But you can't.

In Doubles Protect is an extremely move, and so the game becomes mind games over when to use Protect. There's more information on the opponent's team and *that's* what makes it more about pure mind games in-game as opposed to a surprising team build.

Of course there's the risk/reward games of "guess if he carries Protect", but even with those full stops the games are always shorter than singles. Predicting pivot switches to scare things out is significantly less important in VGC since you have something else on the field to back you up. There just doesn't seem to be the same finesse as dancing between switches to get the upper hand.

if I remember right, alex's team was Mega Mom, who doesn't run protect, scarf toed, band talonflame, specs hydreigon, and assault vest ludicolo, also aegislash didn't technically have protect but king's shield is close enough
