I'd be interested to see if they eventually change all the characters to actual sound effects (ie, them saying their name or otherwise doing non-midi sounding cries)

Pikachu I can assume is a special case. In game, it doesn't really make sense admittedly, but I guess they can do whatever they want since Pikachu did say its name before.

I personally think it's fine. I mean, don't get me wrong, I hate seeing Pikashit everywhere, getting so much attention, but it is the mascot. Just as long as the don't go crazy and add a talking pokemon like Lucario or Mewtwo...

Would probably take pretty long to localize something like this, since most Pokémon have different names in every language.

Pikachu's voice is a convenient case since it's the same everywhere and a pretty iconic cry.

Well, all the cries in the games are midi versions of their names in Japanese. So it's either all games would end up porting with Japanese cries or they stick with the midi.

Categorical mistake:

It's not supposed to make sense in the game's canon. It was simply added as surprise because pikachu is the franchise's icon and like others have pointed out, is the same in all languages.

Asking why it doesn't fit the cannon is like asking how any game easter egg fits into its cannon

Since this thread is about Pikachu specifically, I'd also like to point out that there are TONS of Pikachu NPCs in the overworld of almost every game, who say everything from "Pika Pika" to "Piiiiiika!"
