Well pokemon games aren't known for their stories. And they are bound to stay that way as long as they stick with the evil team format.

This is what gen V at least did right. They tried to mix it up and make it more interesting with N, Ghetsis, the sages and Colress. There was some dynamic going on between characters instead of just the team boss and his cronies.

Unfortunately X/Y came back to the old style, so a good story isn't really their priority. Maybe they're holding it for Z, who knows.

Hell fucking no. N was a cunt all the way to the end of BW, and in BW2 he was characterless. I liked Bianca in BW, but other than her little arc there was nothing that wowed me.

Emerald still has the best story in the series in my opinion. Instead of being some grand "I'm going to be a god/rule the world/kill everyone" story, it was about opposing eco terrorists that were too short sighted to see that what they were doing wouldn't make the world a better place. The weather trio felt larger than life, like you and all the people whose environment they could easily destroy didn't even register for them. They were literal and figurative forces of nature, something that hasn't been revisited in the series since (since the physics trio doesn't actually do anything in the games to threaten the balance of the world, they're just defending Spear Pillar). The Regis were also mysterious and artificial, which made the quest to unlock them feel like it wasn't something you should be doing. Something to note is the battle music for the weather trio and the Regis. The weather trio has a battle theme that sounds like a Godzilla soundtrack, like there's this massive unstoppable monster in front of you. For the Regis, the music sounds extremely odd and artificial with the regi cries mixed into it. It's imposing and weird, which makes it highly memorable.

Gen 5 just tried shoving N down our throats, and tried to sell the protagonist as the foil for N by projecting a theme of ideals and truth onto the legendaries, which I didn't buy for a second. The silent protagonist is not a character, and it was extremely hokey to play him/her up like that. It was like at the end of the game, N would be screaming something like "what do you have to say for yourself?" only to have the protagonist go "..." and him reply "I've heard enough" or some shit. It didn't actually play out that way but that's how it felt. Also BW2 was utter garbage and the only good thing about the story was Colress.

You can do a decent story with that format, same as with the 8 badges-4elite format, it hasnt yet been fully exploited.

I actually like XY's story the best, though I find BW Plasma make much better villains. Team Flare thugs were retarded, but I loved how the story came together at the end and that thing with the immortal guy and his Pokemon was really nice.

The only good stuff about BW2 was seeing the "good" sides of some Plasma members and Colress. I really liked N in BW but his involvement in BW2 was really cheap.

B\W had a great story but the endgame gameplay was tedious. B\W 2 had great characterisation and endgame gameplay but the story was probably the worst of all the main games barring gen 1.

I would be fine with that if they didn't push the chosen one plot device so hard. In Emerald, you were a kid that stumbled into situations where you were the only person who could stop Team Aqua/Magma's scheming, but you were never treated like a god child gifted with greatness and a strong sense of purpose or anything. BW2 reeled that back and I give them credit for that. Hugh was kind of terrible for 99% of the game but at least he wasn't anything more than just a rival with a story.

That was his point.
In my opinion, BW put too much pressure on the main characters being the main characters of the game AND the main characters of the story.
Like, in the other games you're just some trainer who's chanced himself into being in the middle of the conflict, the story moves on while you progress through the game, but besides being the one battling, the story isn't really about you, but the world you're playing in.
However, in BW you're some chosen one who's apparently supposed to be saying all these things against N when all it is is some "Yes" and "No", and it just feels like you're forced into dealing with Team Plasma rather than actually wanting to deal with them cause they're doing any real damage. Just about everything is put to say "You're the best and the most important" but it doesn't really feel like you're doing much.

That's the crux of the problem with linear games featuring silent protagonists (Link, Samus,etc.) You're not making any game changing choices so the story is less interesting. Thus story in these games becomes nothing more than just scrolling text and watching cut scenes.

Having recently played through White 2 for the first time, I have to agree with this. N seemed like he could've been a pretty cool guy, but then that's because he came off as Mr Mysterious to me as I hadn't played B/W. The lowly grunts realising that they'd been played for fools by Ghetsis was a nice touch, but Emerald did the repenting thing too (albeit not as well).
The gen V legendaries representing 'truth' & 'ideals' just didn't work for me. With the weather trio you can actually see their link to their repective forces of nature (to a lesser extent with Rayquaza, though). I get the whole yin/yang/wuji thing, but it just doesn't really work for me (as cool as I find Kyurem).
And the role of the protagonist was pretty different between the games. In Emerald the player simply acts - they beat the bad guys (who see the folly of their plans when they get put into action) & release Rayquaza (who in turn subdues the rampaging duo). In BW2 they have the player actually communicating through their battling of the bad guys (eg with Colress - who I really disliked, although he [HE?!] seems popular in this thread - learning about how you harness the potential of your Pokes [not through EV training or the drugstore, apparently]) which came off really weirdly.

Honestly B\W's story was one of the reasons I disliked Gen V. Being the first game to really push the MC as the main character in the story, it kept forcing you into such annoyingly trivial shit. Like in gen 1 and 2 you encounter team rocket, beat them a few times and then move on with your journey. In B\W it was more you were on your journey merely to keep up with Team Plasma and N.

Like I just wanted to go to the Pokemon league and shit yet I had to fucking beat N and be forced to capture the legendary that I didn't even want.

I can see why people loved it since it was a change of pace, had a story like a real RPG, had actual characters and overworld etc but it really rubbed me the wrong with its slightly hamfisted approach.

If it matters, my favorite game is Crystal.

Games like Shin Megami Tensei give you the ability to make decisions on how you want the silent protagonist to act. If you'e given the choice to kill an innocent demon or free it, you've made even just a small impact on how your character behaves.

I'm going to diverge from the point for a second to tell you about how this can be done poorly. In Shin Megami Tensei IV, your ability to make choices primarily exist on a sliding scale with each choice moving the scale one way or the other with neutrality being a sliver in the middle, and you need to balance one ideology's choices with the other's instead of being able to stay neutral the entire game. This was never the case in the rest of the series, since there were always points when you could specifically choose to move in one direction or the other, and neutrality was always the default. In SMT IV, it's very possible to aim for neutrality, only to miscalculate how far one decision affects your alignment, which can lock you out of being able to get the neutral ending, which is the only ending with any form of satisfaction. This tangent just shows how if you're trying to go with a silent protagonist choose your own adventure approach, you have to give the player clear and reasonable choices or else it undermines the entire point of giving the player autonomy.

To be fair, in my opinion, you don't really play those games for the story, nor Pokemon, you mostly play for the puzzles, challenges, and sense of progression either by getting stronger or playing smarter.
Mostly why I didn't really like BW/B2W2 and XY.
Having a "complex" story is nice and all, but it felt too much like they were putting too much focus on giving me a worthwhile story than on giving me a worthwhile game.

I honestly prefer the story of gen 3 over BW2 - going into the Cave of Origin and fighting inside rocket facilities is better than constantly chasing down a fucking ghost ship for the entire game.

BW2 is probably my favorite game in the series so far, the leveling progression was good it was not like in DPP where lol gym leader pokemon are 10 levels higher than you and it was not baby mode difficulty like in XY. The black city tower was also more fun than the SoulSilver battle frontier, haven't tried the other equivalents yet.

I actually liked gen V's approach on the villains, and not just because of the whole brainwashing people into thinking owning their pokemon is wrong.
In the past games all it felt like taking on the antagonist was that it was just a side thing and wasn't important, gen 5 actually made their presence and build up just a bit more noticeable instead of just being a roadblock

Its pretty bullshit how they make it appear as if one kid can take down a whole organisation with just a few battles, at least BW made it seem believable that it was a huge climactic ending and that you weren't the only person in the whole region to do shit about it.

Gen 4 is my favorite because DEEPEST LORE, but gen 5 had the best actual story. I don't know how this is even up for debate, all the other games in the main franchise never really had a story that involved anything slightly complex. In XY, all of that got moved to the sidequests instead, and in the others it was blatantly non-existant bar maybe a few lines of characterization.

If you're claiming otherwise, then you're just doing it based of what your overall favorite gen is, not based on the story aspect alone.

One thing I'll say about BW's story was it was presented very well. The encounter at Obligatory Forgettable Second town was perfect at showing what the organization was capable of. Instead of just seeing one little grunt doing something bad, you see the full extent of the team for once, and its very intimidating. N was also introduced there, and he was very interesting that first time you fought him. The rest of the story for the main part of Plasma kind of tailed off until the Castle, and N had his ups and downs, but that fucking first scene was great.

Really I just like GSC because the legendaries all have more lore to them unlike RBY which was just Mewtwo but they aren't shoved in your face like the box legendaries in every game since. I totally agree on Rocket being shit in it though.

Mewtwo doesn't even have a role in RB, the only thing he has over Lugia/Ho-oh and the Legendary Beast is that you hear next to nothing about him most of the game, so I suppose you can argue there's a higher sense of mystery to him.

What? B\W was just 'Here's N, your new enemy/rival/best friend/love interest/soulmate' and you are the opposite of him, so you get this here White/Black legendary to battle him.

The fact that Team Plasma was duping the populace and most of their own team isn't anything groundbreaking, it's just a little different from the enemy teams in the four gens before it.

The story was overbearing and not even as compelling as Platinum.

But hey, I just play Pokemon single-player for the bits of lore, exploring with 'muh bros' and interesting characters. And Gen 5 only delivered on the last part.

Well since I couldn't elaborate since I hit the word limit, I'll explain why Colress was great. He was a villain that wasn't a villain just like N but where they differed was in the motivation. N talked about naive bullshit the entire game and I honestly couldn't tell if he was supposed to be likable or purposefully bad. With Colress I could tell immediately he was going to be an antagonist, but I never got the vibe that he was a bad guy. He was written to be clearly likable since whenever he showed up he would praise or help you, and when you get to him he ends up just being the R&D guy working for Ghetsis. He wasn't malicious even if he was working for a bad guy, he was a kook that was wholly interested in the hidden strength of Pokemon. It was really refreshing to have GF add a bad guy that you're opposed to, but isn't shown to have any maliciousness or naivete.

What I loved about B/W was that it had a coming-of-age story that actually involved the protagonist. Both them and rivals start out the journey to have fun with friends and,as they meet gym leaders and other characters their different views of the world brush off on them.

As the plot progresses Cheren's strong view of his future and values clash with those of Alder and Clay for example,and he eventually loses his security and starts reevaluating his views,but that only makes him stronger and more confident in the end. Likewise Bianca starts off without much confidence and without clear direction,but encountering Elesa and Juniper,she learns to be more self-confident and take life one day at the time.

And then we have protagonist. Unlike in previous games,they aren't a badass kid who wants to be the champion with no characterization while they rivals develop. This time,they started their journey for fun,but changed their goals once their started winning gym battles. However then,by the end of the game they realize thee is a much bigger issue at hand that overshadows own personal plans and go fight to protect their world instead.

There is also a coming-of-age story built around N,who,with a stolen childhood,and later shattered world,strives to be the king of Unova,childishly clinging to his own ideals,only to return in BW2 as it's protector.

The message that spanned across the whole generation was to accept diversity and that there isn't a right worldview. The whole castle part with gym leaders uniting with a common goal and N thanking protagonist illustrates it the best.

tl;dr: B/W had the best story in the series.

BW had a great story. Probably best in the series, seconded by Sinnoh and DEEPEST LORE. Gen 6 also had a really good story. 5 was where they seemingly started to actually focus on a plot, side characters, development, etc. And I adored 5's story.

That said, BW2 was shitty. Gameplay wise it was great, but plot wise it was overblown, introduced something shitty like fusion, and had less interesting characters.

Like everything about the Creation trio was vague as fuck, the lake trio could be put down into the excerpt title of a book, Darkrai has like one line, stuff like Heatran and Regigigas are just "there" and even Arceus is just sort of "god"

None of that lore is deep besides maybe Giratina's whole deal or if you count Arceus's interactions between them as lore, maybe.

Lore. World building. It doesn't have to be some big epic flashback.

But it wasn't just the library or the legendaries. There was shit like what Cynthia would talk about, and that cave-in-a-city with her grandparents. There was the connections with Johto and the Unknown. There was the Haunted Chateau. The church. So many things helped towards worldbuilding and lore.

Just because an aspect is SUPPOSED to be shitty doesn't make it not shitty. GSC Rocket is by far the worst Evil Team in all of the games, and I find it hard to believe someone even bothers to argue that. In HGSS maybe, in GSC he was just an asshole the entire game and never did ANYTHING to redeem himself.

Blue is the perfect Rival, and even with his lack of development he's always interesting and funny. He's an annoyance, but an annoyance that you like.

All that lore amounted to "arceus made these guys to do emotion stuff" or "the creation trio created this stuff" and a lot of inbetween text about them being powerful doesn't exactly make for deep or thought provoking lore.

I'll give you stuff about history of Pokemon, because that's pretty good worldbuilding from a standpoint of a world that hasn't really been built on enough, but the legendaries were awful. Juniper, N, and Ghetsis had a better backstory for Reshiram and Zekrom. The city scared of the dragon that would come out at night built you a story without even having to say anything. All that going into the story of the Original dragon is something with a lot of backstory. You can't just sum that up in one sentence like you could for most of Sinnoh's 14 legendaries.

I thought BW's plot was the only one that was actively unenjoyable in its game. The evil team thing works when you make it something that happens alongside your adventure. Muh destiny and saving the world isn't terrible in and of itself, but BW just felt like being shuttled around between clumsy-executed story setpieces while being TOLD that what's happening is super important and the stakes are so high and you should be super invested.

tl;dr: in BW I wanted to go on another Pokemon adventure but I felt like the game wouldn't let me.

I started with Red way back in the day, and Gold is my nostalgia game, not Emerald. I genuinely believe Emerald did the most things right story-wise. The big problem that I had was that it looks so dated on the DS. Sprites both in game and overworld were horrible. Region navigation was fucking horrid, UI was not good.

However, I was in the middle of college and I just didnt have time to focus on Pokemon. But I could not get into B/W. However, I'm loving the shit out of X and Y.
