This meta is so fucking horrible. Its such shit that the only option a bullshit group like Smogon can do is ban anything that's even slightly strong. Not that they didnt already do that already, but now its crazy.

Wtf was GF thinking? So much of the broken shit this gen is obviously overpowered just from their conception.

Game Freak has hit a stride of power creep that probably won't slow down. They feel the need to one-up the older stuff with every new gen. Just look at the box legendaries and you'll see how they really wanted to make them more interesting than anything before it by making them uniquely powerful. Yveltal as an absurdly potent draining move, and Xerneas has the strongest boosting move in the entire game. Megas are just like the Hidden Abilities from BW2, but this time they also get more stats to make them better. You really can't blame the people who play OU for voting to ban the 10 or so things that are three or four times more powerful than the other 45 mons in the tier. A balanced metagame is possible, but things like Mega Kang, Mega Lucario, and Speed Boost Blaziken go against that.

Take a look at UU to see how a balanced metagame can be forged through tight curation. Things were quickbanned because they bent the tier over and plugged away at everything that wasn't built to stop them, so banning them was the best option.

I could see Huge Power (and that other Medicham ability), Parental Bond and Gale Wings getting nerfs next gen.

Yeah I agree the game is pretty shitty now. Every single poke just seems to have way too much coverage or priority which means you have to carry the most contrived shit in order to beat it. People always rat on Smogonbird but the thing is you actually fucking need it just to have a reliable counter against half the metagame.

They're not that bad, realistically. Both players have the option to use them, they only work when you use their mega stone, which eliminates them having any beneficial items.

And fuck smogon, they're the reason the game is such a pile of meta-garbage, anyways. Rather than using strategy to win, smogon lays out the foundation for being a bland, unoriginal cookie-cutter who picks the most overplayed team with the safest moves and max IV spreads. They're the cancer that's killing the game.

the whole point of CAP is to minmax everything while staying in a theme mostly, plus they need to be viable.
If all pokemon designed were as usable as the CAPs in their final stages, I think the game would be a lot better overall.

Its not just Smogon. VGC has the same bullshit going on, only worse because the kind of shit thats allowed in VGC is banned in Smogon.

The problem is that Game Freak makes clearly strong Pokemon that easily outshine others. Its hard not to do when you have ~600 Pokemon, but it should not be anywhere near this bad. This problem only got enhanced when they gave already strong Pokemon the ability to Mega evolve.

First of all, become better.

Second, two of the 'mons in your picture, plus Greninja, the Spinda/Arcanine combo in Doubles, the occasional Breloom, and Gliscor are neutered by Worry Seed, Gastro Acid, or even Skill Swap. The metagame is very much centered on abilities right now, and knowing how to deal with them will give you the upper hand.

I don't think you understand the metagame they want to have. Usage statistics make it so around fifty-five or so mons are locked into a tier, give or take massive spikes in usage skewing the numbers. A good metagame allows lots of things to flourish, which is why centralization is as much of a key word in the lexicon as it is. When something is broken, it pushes a lot of things out of use in favor of counters for the broken mon along with the broken mon itself. If something rules the tier, like say Xerneas for the sake of illustration, the only things viable in OU are Xerneas and the things that stand up to Xerneas. Since every team needs to be prepared for Xerneas and Xerneas counters, only a handful of things actually get used in a large and meaningful capacity. This is a stale metagame, since the things that can play in Xerneas: the metagame are niche and few. This means less options. So ban Xerneas, let the metagame breathe. If you ban the thing that's actively twisting the metagame, the metagame has the chance to flatten out, and more things can be used to a greater effect. If banning one thing makes five or more mons that are perfectly fine in a tier without [broken mon] actually usable, then a ban is worth considering.

It doesn't change the fact that the power creep would get worse. They're all designed for use in OU - if all pokemon were designed with that in mind, we'd more or less see metagames that are dominated by only new-gen mons.

I don't think its getting nerfed, but adjustments to it for moves like seismic toss will probably happen - that was obviously an oversight.

They did say that the power boost from the 'ilate' abilities was a mistake though - I'd fully expect those to be nerfed.

Whimsicott already has Prankster and Worry seed, but the problem in competitive play is that this status is reverted when the mon switches. And since Whimsicott is very easy to force out, you pretty much just end up spending two turns to make the opponent spend two turns, which doesn't affect anything in the long run. You also end up having to waste a team slot on Whimsicott in OU, which is essentially an empty slot since you're using it for a tactic that doesn't do anything.

I understand very well that certain pokes are in a class of their own and have stats, movesets and abilities that make them next to impossible to deal with. But really, it would be next to impossible for them to make the game completely balanced due to the complexity of the typing system, movesets, abilities and stats. Unless they changed up competitive into a rental system with pre-loaded moves and stats, but they'll never do that.

The game clearly isn't meant to be balanced, but for the player to use strategies to overcome weaknesses. But in a competitive setting, strategy is less important than power if certain characters or tools are inherently stronger than others. No one will ever take a risk on a weaker strategy that takes more skill if a mindless one will beat it effortlessly.

The game is an absolute fucking mess from a competitive standpoint, and honestly GF seems to care more about making fans and kids happy by making popular pokemon more powerful. Because it's inherently a kids game.

I see where you're coming from, but I also heartily disagree with you. All of the factors you listed are mitigated and planned for with good teambuilding, which is possible in a tier that has lots of options that are around the same power level. If you were around for Gen 4 OU post-Salamence ban you'll probably remember how many types of teams flourished because the metagame wasn't extremely centralized. Even UU right now is in that sort of state, where the really broken stuff is gone and lots of things can flourish, making the game about teambuilding and good prediction instead of using the obvious broken mon. One of the most highly regarded strategies in UU, the pink core, is still very manageable because while it is a strong strategy, the tier at large is capable of preparing for it.

Their excuse is to say "But we mean for you to play doubles!" because it's so much easier to not break things in doubles. But still, VGC has Kangaskhan in half the teams. It's stupid.

While I agree with you on the power creep and them ushering people into doubles for the wrong reasons, I have to point this one thing out: UU is currently just Gen 5 UU + some of the OU staples from gen 4 and some of the mons that were just barely OU last gen. The power creep hasn't affected UU as much as it has for OU, since the stuff that's BL is broken in UU and thus banned. .

Also, GF needs to provide a standard for what they think constitutes a balanced competitive ruleset. It's obvious that they have 'some' idea when certain ubers are banned from battle tower and item clause is enabled.

GF cares about the official format where seismic toss/wish isn't legal, so that's not they're concern. They said it was seeing 'more usage then they'd like' along with garchomp. Garchomp's nowhere near as good in an expanded dex meta though, so they'll probably just nerf Kang.

Fixing Power-Up punch is something that allows Kang to remain one of the best pokemon in VGC if they want, and it unbreaks it.

Like last gen, there was a team everyone ran of Scizor, Ferrothorn, Politoed, Keldeo, and the last two would vary at times but for the most part people ALWAYS used those four. THAT is cookie cutter. When you get to choose from a combination of six from 40, and no two teams look the exact same? That is not cookie cutter.

That's terrible because things like Arceus, Xerneas or M-Mewtwo are capable of sweeping/walling teams on their own.

I actually wish they'd ban all Legendaries in official formats, not because they're overpowered but rather because they're a pain in the ass to get competitive 5-6IV versions with the right HP for tournaments.

I think the powercreep is enevitible.
But instead of nerfing so many pokemon, they just need to rebalance the game overall.
All those Gen 1 and Gen II pokemon that are no longer viable because shit stats?
rehaul their BSTs, so that they're in the same BST range as "good" pokemon nowadays (so....every FEP would have a BST of...500 and above?)

I think there need to be set BST ranges
Box Legends-600+
Legends and special pokemon 600
High ranking pokemon- 525-580
Starters -525
Low tier FEP 500-520
something like that.

There are also alot of pokemon so suck because of their shitty movepools.....like Luxray.
Great stats, decent ability, but it doesn't have good attacks to back itself up.

I hope they'll do that in future generations.
They did that with some Pokemon this gen, like Wigglytuff and Vileplume. But they need more than just 10 points.
Hopefully they'll do a complete overhaul.

It gives me even more satisfaction wrecking them though. I understand priority is such a necessity in this meta, but I genuinely despise anyone who chooses to use Talonflame, and Mega Kangaskhan to a lesser extent.

It's a priority problem mainly. I don't really give a fuck about Charizard Y.

because Rough Skin Rocky Helmet Levitate and Intimidate aren't enough? And Curse, and Iron Defense, Contrary Superpower ....
Seriously, the Assault Vest is the only thing thats ever given Sp. Defense an edge over physical.

If thats enough, Thick Fur halves physical damage. Also Eviolite boosts both making it a better AV that only works on some pokemon.

Physical attackers have a lot to deal with, Special attackers dont.Thats why the entire Ubers game is all Special.
