Well, we already knew about Mewtwo's new 'forms' for a while before it was revealed that they were Mega evolutions. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is pic related the first Mega evolution confirmation we got?

I mostly remember being turned off by most of the designs. Even now, only one or two Megas look just as good, or better, than their base 'mon. Although everyone was circle-jerking over the 'fabulous' Ampharos at the time.

digimon doesnt have exclusive rights over 'alternative' evolution. even in gen 1 you had trade evos, slowpoke + shellder, shit like that. temporary evolution doesnt make it digimon either. no one was shouting digimon at formes, and that's all megas are.

the closest we got to digimon was kyurem formes because of how unrestrained and messy their designs were. that's the only real distinction: the level of complexity in designs.

digimon operates on changing back and forth constantly, with massive changes between each form. megas are only slight power ups to a final form.

Pokemon never had forme-gimmicks save for a few legendaries (which makes sense), or ditto (which also is fairly reasonable). With the advent of a 'temporary' evolution that amps them up and overdesigns them, it is pretty much digimon. the name 'mega' doesn't help either

I think his point was, Digimon didn't create super forms, so saying "IT'S LITERALLY DIGIMON" doesn't make sense and it's retarded as fuck.

Not to mention there isn't even a stage called Mega in Japan(it goes Baby 1, Baby 2, Child, Adult, Perfect, Ultimate), so the "b-but it's called Mega, so that means it's copying Digimon!" is also retarded.

I thought it sounded like a half thought out idea contrived simply for the sake of trying to do something "big" to get people excited about pokemon again/ curb criticisms that pokemon is pretty much the same game over and over again.
Now that the dust has settled, I hate it and add it to the list of things they shouldn't have done with pokemon.
I think it was half thought out and poorly executed way to add an artificial layer of complexity to a battle system that really didn't need anymore to it

Still don't like 'em. A lot of mons will now never get an evo, and rather than give mega's to third stage mons who were underpowered they just handed them to those that were already the most powerful and/or popular. It could have been a good idea, but it was horribly implemented.
As a lorefag however, I'm curious to find out if and how they might relate to Primal forms.

Also I hate how they decide to distribute mega evolutions. Some of them are top tier design (mega mommy) or mechanic wise (gyarados/pinsir) but then there are others that are simply lazy like scizor and garchomp, even though I like megachomp's design because it's so exaggerated. They are simply the same mons with a minimal change in bst and distribution. Meanwhile older mons just sit there and wallow in their own shit. There are mons that could be a lot better with mega evolutions, but there aren't many. What most of the mons from older gens need are either moves or regular evolutions. Also some of them could work with new abilities, for example if Feraligatr finally got Sheer Force and it could become a decent setup sweeper.
