It's really popular with kids who grew up with diamond/pearl. Pokemon is a huge cash cow so whatever's popular they will keep adding. I think they put a lot of effort into him too in the first place by making a movie or whatever.

The answer should be obvious, OP.

Plus, there was a time when Lucario was fading away, and they went for a repeat of his success. Didn't work because kids didn't like Zoroark, so Lucario had to step back in.

That and Lucario re-replaced Zoroark in Pokemon Sunday show due to fan demand.

So GF realized that they shouldn't try to replace him and keep giving it publicity even after the end of Gen 4.

I think Zoroark is much more superior to Lucario, at least design wise

But I wish they'd just stop trying to push certain mons in the first place

Possible number of reasons, it was designed by Ken Sugimori, it was designed with being a new mascot for older kids in mind, being the first non-legendary to be a movie focus (Unown doesn't count) even becoming the mascot for that weekly tv show.

It's clear that GF had a lot banking on it, I mean the damn thing had like 3x the usual merch the other movie spotlight mons had.

Dedenne is so, so fucking cute, its like (imo) a back up plan when people start to get tired of so much Pikachu.
This wasn't the case with Pachirisu or Emolga, those failed to steal the spotlight.

I think it's been true since the second gen that certain pokes are made just for the merchandise. Lucario just happens to be one of their larger attempts at it. Admittedly, even I am fascinated by the Poke-Jedi, and in that light, I think they knew what they were doing. They used something that was already popular worldwide.

I'm still convinced that Dedenne was designed for all the people who missed Fatchu.

I mean Pikachu got streamlined to make it more expressive and easier to animate - fatchu was cuter but kind had its arms stuck to the front of its body the whole time usually.

Dedenne is the only pikaclone that I don't dislike.
I don't know why they insist on creating a new pikaclone every gen though. All of them suck and they never become popular, it's just a waste of their time to create them instead of a different line.

The plusle and minun merch in japan actually sell pretty well. The continued to sell well into 4th gen, having more merch than pachirisu.

Dedenna might just be the first pikaclone to appeal since the failure squirrels.
