Talonflame = Staraptor > Swellow > Pidgeot = Noctowl > Unfezant

And as for alternate birds

Fearow > Pelipper = Swanna > Murkrow

In-game, not really. Talonflame wouldn't have Gale Wings for a normal run, whereas Staraptor is much more useful with Close Combat.

In terms of design, I absolutely agree with OP. I was very disappointed in the whole line aside from Pidove itself. It's probably my least favorite bird, period.

Pretty sure everybody just got a Fearow instead, the only regional birds i used for ingame were Starly and Fletchling, Swellow was way too situational ingame as nobody burned or poisoned my bird and paralyzed is just as good as dead, i also got a Dodrio in kanto instead of Pidgey or Spearow

That's Brave Bird. Flare Blitz had to be relearned as it was a lv.0 move. Regardless of the matter, Talonflame has pretty shitty in-game wise.

Talonflame has fucking Peck until level 44 and Flame Charge is the only fire STAB you get unless you spend a scale on Flare Blitz, Fly fucking sucks even for ingame.

Staraptor gets Aerial Ace early, learns Take Down before evolving and then learns Close Combat after it evolves into Staraptor, you don't even need to waste your Steel Wing TM on it to get past rocks or steels, plus it gets Brave Bird at level 40-something in all the games.
