are people even excited to see new pokemon? cross-gen (pre)evos perhaps?

They can, but GF looks to be in favor of megas, and sadly megas are very popular.
All of the megas so far are overdesigned, but kids seem to love that and eat it up.

I hope this whole mega business is a gimmick they abandon. Pokemon evolutions should be permanent. This in-battle sudden powerup idea feels too digimony for my taste.

If they add fusions, we'll be going into Yugioh territory, and nobody wants to go there.

Don't worry about it. This only one way of looking at it. The reality is actually far more complex. I think the one you're referring to is Pucchiemon, the Green variety. (there is also a pink one)

My only gripe with megas is why they gave so many overpowered pokemon already the option to mega evolve.

I mean did Garchomp, Gengar, Lucario, Blaziken and the most stupid of all; Legendary megas need to exist?

No because we know that's not a possibility until Gen 7 arises.

People thought we wouldn't even get new Megas in ORAS.

I would be much, much, MUCH more excited to see the new megas that could potentially actually happen than the fakemon that nobody cares about, wants to see, and wouldn't happen anywhere in the next 5 years.

Show me the new Pokemon HG/SS, FR/LG, or even Emerald, Platinum, BW2, Crystal and Yellow introduced.

We currently aren't anywhere near the next generation. They aren't going to add completely new Pokemon, or even standard evolutions or pre-evolved forms, in the middle of a gen, but they've shown that they're perfectly willing to add Megas. So, you get people speculating a lot about new megas.
