Are there any other external formats out there other than Smogon builds and VGC builds? Other websites or communities trying to create their own metagame?

I've seen a lot of rage here but all centered onto smogon/vgc (and eventually smogon/karenfags)

Pokebattle uses a very different kind of tiering system, every mon gets assigned a value (PBV) and your team can only have a certain total amount (their main tier is 1000PBV). Kinda like budgetmons which was an OM somewhen. Their balancing is done entirely through modifications of a mon's PBV afaik. Of course that has its own issues, like people using one shitmon with low value as a SR lead or whatever so they have more left for the rest.

My only reason for ever going on showdown is so that I can test cart teams before I breed them. It doesn't help when what you're trying to test has been smogon'd.

I think OP is looking for a singles site.

Singles will likely never be balanced without some sort of comprehensive banlist. As someone who doesn't play singles outside of the occasional randbat, Smogon probably has the right idea for trying to balance singles.
