The online is still alive and booming, though that probably won't matter if you play together. You'll probably love it and find a lot of new stuff to mess around with since gen 1 was your only other game. Go for it, if your girlfriend likes games like Pokemon you'll have fun together.

I'm not sure, she's pretty new to gaming and her favorite games are Mario Kart, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and The Sims. I hope she'll like it.

If that's the case, XY is the perfect game for her. It's not too difficult, there's a ton of mons to use, the story is very Nintendo with the whole friendship thing going on, and the ability to dress up your protagonist is a highly underrated feature that adds a massive amount of charm to the game for people who like customization. She'll love it.
