I feel like if there was ever a culture that existed in tandem with Pokemon, my headcanon is that they're almost all near human levels of intelligence, or directly at it. Sometimes, even surpassing it. That's why they're such good and understanding companions.
However, they aren't people, so affection works differently here. It's like a happy mix between your pet and your friend.
When I ask myself if something is acceptable to do to my Pokefriend, I ask two things:

"Would I do it to a human friend?"
and
"Would I do it to my dog?"

If the answer is yes to either of those things, it's fine.
This headcanon makes practically everything okay as long as it isn't sexual.
But again, I just don't care. Fuck 'em if you wanna.
