Pokemon was already declining as a fad by the time G/S rolled around and in a way, G/S made it worse by teasing you with the Gen 1 starters while the anime was still in Kanto/Orange Islands in some territories.
Gen 5 was a point where a lot of old players left/abandoned the series (or rather, merely skipped a gen) because of the whole fresh start thing and GARBAGE AND ICE CREAM MONSTERS LOLOLOL, so there were quite a bit of people actively hating on pretty much everything gen 5 as there were people defending it.
