However, how about buffing up Hail somewhat? Or creating a move with a high chance of freezing the opponent? It'd go right to Ubers ala Darkrai/Dark Void, but eh, what can you do.

First and foremost, Gamefreak needs to stop focusing so heavily on the defensive end of the spectrum. Almost all ice types are either very bulky, or frail as a feather. There are few in between.
Now, we can focus ice as an offensive typing. It's super effective against Dragon, Grass, Ground, and Flying. That's pretty good, especially with the large amounts of 4x weaknesses ice can hit.
Here is an example of a theoretical good ice type mon:
>HP: 90
>Attack: 130
>Defense: 75
>Sp. Attack: 20
>Sp. Defense: 100
>Speed: 85
With the right moveset, it can be a very viable choice scarf user, or a choice band user with Ice Shard, or maybe just life orb.
GameFreak really needs to create ice types that aren't too different from the stats of regular Pokémon.

Next up, the actual type itself:
Ice needs to resist water, grass, and ground.

Also, whenever introductions like this are made, there should also be a surplus of competitively viable grass and ground types for ice to put in check.

If GameFreak takes changes like these to heart, it can make ice type much better.

Remove the ability Ice Body and make all Ice Types regenerate 1/16 health per turn in hail.

Ice now resists Water, Grass & Ground.

Ice is now super effective against Water and Rock.

Poison is the worst type.

Ice type gets some nice damage on a number of pokemon. Freeze Dry is even helps out against Water types.

Poison meanwhile gets stab on grass and fairy. Big whoop.

Ice really needs a couple more resists, like Water and Fairy. Removing that Fighting weakness would be nice as well, since that's the one that makes the least sense. Add in a 50% Defense boost under hail and it'd be a pretty good start.

You know what else is weak to EQ? Steel. Guess what also can't hit much for SE? Steel. By the way, those are true of steel before the nerf--arguably the best type there was. Of course it is. But no fucking FE pokemon has a stat that low unless it's gimmicky. When GF minmaxes, they take it down to 50 at the lowest.

It's just that faggot "theorymonners" or people shitting out fake megas or gen /vp/ minmax atk and sp atk to an absurd extent to justify a stupid stat spread on the basis of "well the BST isn't that high!" It's obnoxious and unrealistic. You didn't even have to do it, because 130 atk isn't uncalled for, but it's still obnoxious and sets a bad precedent.

Poison was always good defensively? I remember back in the beginning, it had 1 fewer resistance, and an additional weakness to bug. Not that that mattered much; there were no bug moves- but neither were there fighting moves of any note for them to resist. Oh and Fairy didn't exist.

For practical purposes, they resisted only themselves and grass and were blown apart by the most terrifying type (Psychic) and the only type with a no clause, perfectly accurate, BP100 move (Ground).
So no, they weren't always defensively good- they were in fact trash defensively until psychics were fixed in Gen 2- and only really became good when Gens 4 brought CC/Focus Miss for them to wall.

I've actually found mono-poison to be one of the easiest to run, because of the amazing coverage you get from things like Gengar and the Nidos, as well as the defensive synergy that Crobat and Drapion bring. Plus, M-Venusaur is fucking amazing.
In terms of what it hits and what it resists, it's not bad. It's amazing how many low-ranking players don't know poison resists fighting.

give steel their dark resistence back, remove steels ice resistence and remove the the steel weakness from ice.
nerf stealth rocks that it will always hit with neutral damage.
maybe remove bug resistance from fairies.
/fixed the complete metagame.

Poison should still be super-effective against Bugs, as was the case during Generation One. It makes too much sense from a real-world perspective.

The problem is ice is solely useful as an offensive type, and every fucking water type learns ice beam, so there's really no reason to ever run a pokemon that is actually an ice type. Easier to have a water type with coverage.

If they were to totally rework the ice type rather than just giving it more resistances, lower the number of pokemon that can have ice moves.

it's something that helps the ice types that already exist - slow as fuck tanks that have no business being such.

a teammate spamming surf would raise its partner's defense so high that mons like avalugg can actually do their jobs well without being broken as fuck.

I forgot to mention that ice types don't even need to have the type chart altered to improve them - you could give them more exclusive moves and abilities. for example:

Icicle guard: protect for one turn, raises attack by one stage

Snowman strike: 60 +30 bp physical non-contact 2-hit move (mon throws a large snowball at the opponent, followed by a smaller one with a face on it) 10% chance of freezing for both hits.

That hail buff is great, too. Most Ice types are hit with Fighting, Ground, or Rock moves anyway.

Can we set a rule for this thread that no matter how much you want to fix Ice, Grass/Rock/Bug can't be nerfed in anyway?

Fighting seems like a nice compliment - and if it's relatively fast the types actually work nicely together, alllowing it to hit pretty much everything unresisted with both stabs.

strong against: normal, grass, flying, ground, rock, steel, dragon, dark, ice.

neutral against: fire, water, psychic, poison, ghost, fairy, electric, fighting, bug.

defensively it loses the rock weakness, at least, but gains a fairy, flying and psychic weakness.

it also gains a bug and dark resistance though, if that's worth anything.
