I fell in love with Pidgey after watching the anime.

Sucks that 15 years later it doesn't get Gale Wings and high special attack to terrorize everyone with Hurricane.

I started watching the anime after he already had Butterfree, and when I got the game I ended up catching a Weedle because I thought that's what would evolve into a Butterfree (didn't even run into a Caterpie my first time through Viridian).

I'm fairly certain is was a Pidgey, because I remember perceiving Ratatta to be more rare.

All I really remember from that period is being stuck in my house, and routinely losing to Brock.

I was about 4-5 or so when I first got Pokemon Red and hadn't quite grasped the concept until Misty kicked my shit. So I went to nugget bridge, and caught 5 Oddishs, lost again, realized how retarded I was, and restarted, building a better group, and the game went overall better for me.
