Gen 2 was only slightly better than Gen 4 because I grew up with Gen 2. Minus physical/special split

As much as I loved Gold as a kid, Johto fucking sucks compared to what we have nowadays. When I was a kid I didn't care how empty the region was because it was huge, but now I get bored when games that are huge but having nothing going on. Maybe it's because I have less time as an adult to just roam around doing nothing.

Sinnoh as a region actually feels populated and dynamic even though D/P were really shitty. No two routes feel exactly the same in Platinum, which can't be said at all for Johto.

Gen 2 is probably the best generation so far. I really liked Johto with the addition of Kanto though it would have been great if it had more content. HGSS fixed some of the issues but I'd like to see what else they add for the future remake if they make one.

HGSS fixed absolutely none of the issues the originals had. If anything they were kept the same on purpose.
