I'd really like to see a full list of who designed which pokemon. It'd be interesting to note the design styles beyond Sugimori's redrawings of them.

As far as she goes, it doesn't surprise me that Dragonair, Rapidash, Wartortle and all the eeveelutions were done by the same person. Those are usually the ones girls like in particular. Most, if not all of my female friends who are into Pokemon claim at least one of those as their favorites.

if it wasn't for the Beedrill, Whimsicott and Victreebel lines I'd say she suffers a bit from 'It just gets bigger' design choices.

But it hardly matters since a lot of these mons are my favorites.

I do find it interesting that she did Vulpix but not Ninetales though

Made some of my favorite or at least very appreciated Pokemon: Charmeleon, Wartortle, Kakuna, Beedrill, Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Poliwhirl, Pikachu, Raichu, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victribell, Eeveelutions, Dragonair, Musharna, Whimsicott, Lilligant, Zorua, Cinccino.
All pretty good and cute.

Has also created the Pokemon mascot, wins hands down the Pokemon designers cup.

Only thing is Poliwrath that just gets bigger and Ponyta's line that beside the flames is just too realistic like its counterpart Zebstrika or Sawsbuck.

It's not "just a statue". It's based off of the golem of prague, a hebrew myth that incorporates sealing a spirit into a man made body, hence the seals on it's body. It's an interesting concept for a ghost type. Built to protect it's creators.

Combine that with mixing it with the giant robot image, which is an obvious and heroic likeness; makes Golurk and interesting mix of old myth and pop culture, very far from "just a statue".

Nigga can fly, how could anyone hate a flying giant ghost robot?

Read a fuckin' book once in awhile. Artists can and DO think long and hard about design basis and aesthetic. That alone is a reason why so many fakemon fail to hit a certain note, they lack the ingenuity to reach all around for influence.

What the fuck kind of reasoning is that anyway. They're PokeMONSTERS; they're not poketanimals. We've always had non-animal pokemon, and it's not like ghosts possessing objects is unheard of either. Rotom is the go-to example for that to begin with; but spirits taking the shapes of objects isn't some random thing they did because they were running out of ideas, it's a japanese mythological concept that spirits dwell in everything, that's why there's chibi mascots of literally everything there, that's why common video game enemies in Japanese-inspired levels are often shit like umbrellas or lanterns with eyes.

Seriously, how the fuck you can complain about a fucking sarcophagus, a golem robot, and a gothic soul sucking lamp is beyond me. I hope you never get into anything involving creativity.

In the old anime Fatchu wasn't able to do much but wiggle its front legs without going horrendously off-model. And who's to say she didn't slim down Pikachu herself?

Gogoat is a goat based off of motorcylces for pete's sake and it's a fabulous example of what you can do with just an absurd concept and make it something palatable and simple for normal kids.

It's possible for something to be well designed and yet not appeal to a specific person.

Let's say they made a ghost/water umbrella pokemon, basing it on the yokai, except they make it resemble a modern umbrella and mixing in design cues from rainmaker spirits in other myths.

It would have a solid foundation and could even be aesthetically pleasing.

But someone who automatically dislikes object based monsters is just gonna complain about how it's a 'fucking umbrella' and hate it on that basis alone.

That'd be a bit laborious for an umbrella to save the water that falls on it don't you think?

Maybe it could have an ability where rain makes it's defense boost during it, it could even transfer that to partner pokemon considering that it is an umbrella.

It's because a good portion of /vp/ aren't baby casuals who bitch at newer gens for having object-based pokemon.

You know the type, they played gen 1 and then they look at the newer pokemon without a fondness for pokemon OR design on that note and go like "that's not a charizard, pokemon today are lame and that justifies why I'm not into it anymore because I watch real TV"

It's a living piece of metal, but that's normal for steel types. But it just looks so fucking unnatural. Metgross is one of my favorite Pokemon, but this dumb little thing just makes me mad to look at. No, I'm not butthurt about losing to a Klefki, I just don't like it.
It's born with keys. What do they open if they were developed in the embryo?
It has a key on its head and a keyhole on its face.
And it has a gender, on top of that.

That's like saying magnemite is literally just a magnet. It's not a keyring, it a metallic teardrop-shaped creature with a key-like horn, and flexible arms that it wraps in a ring. It's not born with keys, it collects them. No, hatching from an egg with keys doesn't count, anymore than kangaskhan hatching with a baby in its pouch counts.

You should really watch the klefki special form the movie, it shows how it's more of a creature than an object.
