Ofcourse it's not a problem for VGC players because the VGC playerbase is super active and friendly and you can always find someone to play with the ruleset by. However, there are a lot of pokemon players that don't even know VGC exists, and since smogon is the largest metagame by playerbase, they have the biggest influence over the competitive community as a whole. If you enjoy singles, unless you want to play a shit format like battlespot, it's hard to find someone willing to play 6v6 singles that aren't by smogon rules.
While I think singles aren't all that exciting, there are people that prefer them, and when the closest thing they have to a governing body makes a stupid decision, it can't hurt to express discontent with the decision
