Okay, /vp/, I'm ready to fall down the rabbit hole.

I've always been a casual player and I skipped three generations (R/S/E, D/P/Plat, B/W/B2/W2), I've never given a second thought to EV training and I didn't even finish X/Y yet.

So I'm going to start from the top - gonna restart my X/Y game fresh and get right back into the thick of things.

So - who's a must-catch in X/Y? How many people will I realistically encounter online now that the game is nearly a year old? Should I even bother with EV training? If I don't, will online battling be an uphill struggle?

(All in all the absolute most important thing to me here is that I can still raise my favorites. Gonna be representing w/ pic related until the R/S remakes come in November.)

Well, online battling probably won't work for you at all if you don't ev train (at least have max evs on all your pokes), but super training makes everything training (marginally) less tedious.

Also decent teams can be built around bad pokemon. So you should be able to raise your favorites no matter what they are as long as to you do some teambuilding exercises.

In-game wise, I'd say Honedge, Skiddo, and Helioptile should all be considered. Get a Sylveon, if you want a fairy. (catch one at level 20. at 21 Eevee learns a new move and won't have a fairy-type move.) Don't use Amaura. for a mega, use Aerodactyl, the Kanto starters, Ampharos, or Gengar

It's a mixed bag, really.

Yes. without EVs, you'll get wrecked hard. IVs aren't as important, but don't have shit ones.

Yes. you'll get kill.

In-game, any Pokemon is perfectly fine to use. (except Amaura.)

If you don't EV train and get good natures just be prepared to get bent over a table, everyone else does this (or just hacks their shit so they're at that level) or just straight uses legendaries because git gud (they aren't that scary though and I always beat them with shit tier by smogon standard mons)

The actual pokemon you use is only about 40% of the battle, it's all about how you type cover and optimize those mons and how you fill out your team overall.

As far as getting matches online, sometimes it'll pop up saying 'no trainers found' but you just re-search and it always hits someone.

You should also totally ignore any smogonfags or other soserious battlers, and just use what you want, only consult smogon stuff to check what your team is on the tier lists for lols, and maybe check what movesets they like to use on those mons for ideas

Ingame XY is piss easy, you could probably run through it with 6 Ledians, just use whatever you like
When it comes to online, you're definitely going to need to EV train and possibly IV breed, but it's easy as hell in XY

Aside from Nidorina, I'd say Farfetch'd, Gardevoir, and pic related.

Well... Nidoqueen can certainly be used, Farfetch'd is unfortunately so weak you'd have to do something kinda gimmicky for it, Gardevoir is good (I use her, and you see her around sometimes)

Haunter can definitely be used, obviously gengar and mega-gengar are OP tier but haunter holding an eviolite is actually totally useable.

You have to balance your team between your favorite and realizing you're going to run into japanese guys who are using Dialga Zygarde Darkrai Mewtwo-Y Ylveltal Reshiram (and are still terrible but you have to play it smart)
