Considering Sakurai has thrown away transformations which is near impossible for the 3ds hardware to handle trainers are now a thing of the past.. which is really good mind you... lets save that shit for pokken.
Instead i'll give you a solid list of pokemon i think are plausible for an appearance as a playable character and reasons:
>GENGAR
this guy has been very popular since gen 1 and hasnt had a bad run in the competetive scene ever since. He could also get his mega as his final smash which is fitting for his controvertial power.
>BLAZIKEN
He was given as a gift to everyone that got x & y, so he'll have a fresh new fanbase.. that and it is a solid rep for the new game coming out.
>SCEPTILE
A very commonly requested fighter, not only is his upright posture easy to make a fighting moveset around he is a grass rep completing the trifecta alongside water greninja and fire charizard
>MEOWTH
Meowth has been speculated to be a contender since the first smash bros. Not only has he been majorly popularized due to the anime alongside jigglypuff but he has his very own game. Meowth is less likely, but i love him all the same.
>GARDEVOIR
Even though gardevoir has been confirmed to be a pokeball pokemon once again, her popularity is still climbing and is one of the many recognizable and easy to make a moveset for pokemon around
>MEWTWO
hes been in already.. hes got new relevancy. Besides Pikachu and Jigglypuff he may be the most recognizable pokemon ever. He also looks like something out of the Mother series.. an enemy of Ness'
