They actually overhauled the sounds of the older Pokémon.

Pikachu is the mascot of the series and more important, its voice and name is the same everywhere in the world, so they can do whatever they want with it.

Starting from Gold & Silver, all Pokemon you find in the overworld as sprites and can talk to usually have written sounds similar to the anime ones.

Even in Red & Blue, the cries were similar too, it's just that the localizing staff didn't notice it and kept them the same as the Japanese ones (Like Jigglypuff going "Pu puu" from Purin).

A little bit, but not really, since Pikachu is the only one that retains the same voice actor outside of Japan, at least as far as I know.

Plus, whilst I used to like the idea of using the anime voices, I've changed my mind now, because the cries make more sense.

I'd be surprised if anyone does. To be fair, the only reason you could recognise them by the anime "voices" is because they all sound like they've got brain damage, since they yell their names over and over again (with a few exceptions). They're like a downy with Tourette's.

Pikachu is 100x more well-known than any other pokemon besides maybe some other original 150 like charizard, mewtwo and snorlax. He's on every smash bros boxart for gods sake. Pikachu is almost as big as the word pokemon itself. How can you even compare the yellow rat with other pokemon?!
