Is anyone else falling out of love with the series?

I thought I could handle the new Mega mechanic, but every time they ruin a new pokemon with a Mega it breaks my heart a little more.

Also, the general "Nintendo babby" pandering that is resulting in easier-than-easy playthroughs and silly extras like Pikachu-bullshit.

I feel like Gamefreak are ripping apart our beloved franchise piece-by-piece until it completely destroys the series.

Anyone agree? Or am I just outgrowing the series?

Not for the reasons you stated, but I am getting out of pokemon.
The games are remaining to stagnant, They need to branch out and try something new, it's just the same thing over and over again, I didn't enjoy the X/Y story at all. The franchise for me was at it's highest during B/W release, now I just barely give a fuck.

Yeah, man. I don't know whether it's for the same reasons as you, but I didn't really get into Pokemon X. Bought it last December and I only reached the town after Lumiose yesterday. Maybe it improves later on, but I'm kind of bored with the game right now. It seems as though the tempo of the game is constantly disrupted by interactions with your rivals.

Hopefully I'll be more into ORAS.

If only the NPCs along with the plot has more depth or if it already has a depth, make them feel as if alive. More interactions outside gyms etc. Why they love to play a step forward (BW) then a few steps back (XY).

They've never really changed the game, have they? With most series, there's a changing up of the mechanics, but the fundamental gameplay is exactly the same all the time.

I definitely think they needed a shake up - reformed battle mechanics or other game quests. It's always been 8-badges-and-beat-the-Champion, and nothing else.

If I made a game, I'd implement way more competitions:

>contest halls and Grand Festival
>Pokethlon-style mini-games and a Pokelympic tournament
>mini-quests to complete for NPCs, like "finding a specific pokemon" or "searching for a item" or "beating a bully in a pokemon battle" or "growing specific Berries" or whatever.

There are so many ways to reinvigorate the series with new things. I don't necessarily agree that Mega evolutions were the answer. You're still left with an outdated game that hasn't really changed in gameplay terms in nearly 20 years.

Game Freak do tend to keep implementing new features then ripping them out again, though. I've just recently played through all of the fifth gen games, and compared to XY, they have a shitton more content in them. Even between BW and B2W2, they removed the crossover Entralink feature, which I thought was really cool (not that I've actually ever got to try it out for myself, but just imagine doing that online).

The difficulty has definitely gone down. In the grand scheme of things, Pokemon has always been a pretty entry-level RPG in terms of difficulty, but it still had tough parts. XY, for example, were disgustingly easy, though. I've been playing some of the first and second gen games recently, so I can say with confidence that they are indeed more difficult, although admittedly, part of that is due to the much more shallow and limited mechanics, including things such as non-reusable TMs, EVs, and the physical/special split.

Pokemon X and Y were really easy in the playthrough to get players to do the PvP. It's odd, after so many years of players hating on the PvE part of the game it's the stuff they miss the most.

I fell out of love with the series because it's woefully unbalanced. I don't know why they chose to buff assorted shitmons +10 to their BST when some need like +100 and others need, like -100.

I just can't deal with lack of balance. Most fully-evolved mons should be able to hold their own, and they don't.

Megas would be fine if they were given to weaker mons to make them viable, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to who does or doesn't get a mega. Why there needs to be a Mega-Mewtwo is beyond me.

Sold my 3DS and X to my friend so he could gift it to his girlfriend for her birthday. She probably doesn't care about balance and will be able to just have some casual fun.

But I feel like they need to be inventive with gameplay. Sure, you can say the Mega Evolutions are a new mechanic, but they haven't really changed much.

I feel like the problem is the Gym Challenge. Not that it should be scrapped, but merely expanded upon. Don't you feel like we need a fresh angle on this challenge? A revamping of the Gyms, the inclusion of new pokemon challenges, or something?

I suppose I just find it disappointing that, almost like the anime, Gamefreak are designing new games with the newest generation in mind, continually repeating old games with minimal changes. And they can get away with it, because the younger generations lap up the games. But it leaves older gamers disappointed because we never get that step up in difficulty or gameplay that we desperately want.

Exactly - it'd be great if every pokemon had their own niche and was somewhat viable.

But I'm not sure that:

The ones that change types are just fanwank and I don't even think they consider what that does for the viability of said pokemon. Sadly, the only way to balance pokemon is to rewrite the entire game from the ground up. Being based on an RPG system does not work.

The Pokemon series suffers from the worst case of bloat in videogaming history.

Every installment is just "more". More Pokemon, more moves, more items, more types, nothing ever really changes or evolves, it's just the same game over and over again with ~100 extra Pokemon each time. The series takes a sideways step every iteration without ever moving forward.

The overworld is the best example. Aesthetics aside, modern-day Pokemon overworlds are identical to Kanto on the GB. Why don't we have a Zelda-style overworld, a big open place to explore, where you use Pokemon's natural abilities to explore - like say you go into a volcano, and the only way to get through is to catch a local Magcargo and ride it through the magma. Or maybe you go to the jungle, and you need to catch a Mankey to help swing you on vines across ravines. There's so much potential there, but no, overworlds are still just a series of fenced roads connecting a series of towns, completely static and almost completely non-interactive. It's terrible.

And it's never going to change as long as people keep buying the games exactly as they are. Why put more effort in than you have to, after all?

I personally think mega evolutions are boring and annoying. They make convoluted gameplay even more convoluted. I'm starting to think that perhaps critical hits aren't such a great idea, either. I thought they were, but the random factor in what is an otherwise very strategic game can be a pain in the ass.

I was also thinking about gyms recently, myself. For one, I think the name should be change. At least personally, I think the names "gym" and "gym leader" are totally stupid. But, it's 2:30am, so don't ask me to think of something better right now. I've got nothing.

The biggest problem I find is how the improve some features, remove others, and leave the rest out to dry. Sometimes, instead of innovating, they just remove a feature. Or they don't utilise a feature to its full extent.

There definitely needs to be some more fixes to stats. Some Pokemon feel completely broken, whilst others are completely unusable. That shit needs to be sorted.

I personally think it'd be nice to limit the amount of new Pokemon for each new generation, too. Look at gen 5. So much shit. Gen 6, on the other hand, has only 69 new Pokemon, the majority of which are good (unfortunately, yet again, not all of them are competitively viable. Fuckin' Malamar I am disappoint). More evolutions and pre-evolutions would be nice, instead of all this mega evolution crap (which I hope becomes a regular evolution step next generation).

YES. If only they buffed ALL Pokemon and debuff a few (not Legendaries though) so that people can seriously have variety of mixed teams with different faces or sturdy monoteams. Basically they can play with AL their favourites.

If only... even male Combee would be useful.

But I'm not falling out of this 'fandom'. Since I pledged to myself to support it till the end of my life. Including Digimon.

I know - and while HMs were annoying, they added a 'puzzle' element to the overworld that made it interesting. Now it's, as you say, full of static roads with nothing to do except battle trainers and move on.

There's so much potential there for an expansive RPG with buckets of charm and depth and inventive things to do. But they'll just continue making new pokemon and slightly changing the region aesthetics because that's enough to sell games.

It's disappointing when you see what pokemon could be. The games are on a 3D-enabled system and we're essentially still playing GB Pokemon Red&Blue with boosted graphics.

I like the idea that female Combee evolves into Vespiquen, but it sucks the male Combee can never become anything.

Which further supports my argument that we should have different Pokemon with the same evolutions. Imagine if male Combee could become Beedrill. Dedenne could become Raichu. Things like that. I think that'd be an exciting element, and it'd require next to no extra work.

Ohms definitely need an overhaul, too. They just need to stop them from being moves that have to use a move slot on a Pokemon and require the Move Deleter for. Seriously, the Move Deleter exists solely for HMs (well, and arguably breeding egg moves, but not that's not really necessary).

I actually agree with you. I wouldn't mind a "Gen 4" style expansion every gen - maybe 60/70 new pokemon and a small amount of additions to existing pokemon.

I suppose the problem is their target market. They don't care about making the games better, they only care about making something that a 7-year-old can beat easily and be psyched enough about that he'll spend money on a sequel. I find it hard to accept that.

Pokemon X and Y were devoid of content, shamelessly admitted that they wanted to make the game as easy as possible, and introduced a mechanic designed to make fan favourites more powerful than they already were.

These games were a confirmation of every fear many long-time fans had about the future of the series. I will likely play ORAS as long as they don't fuck them up too much with Mega bullshit, but after that I will need to hear some pretty great reviews that specifically address how they have fixed all their mistakes in order to buy Gen 7 and beyond.

XY did plenty right, but they also were indeed devoid of content, and relatively easy. I pretty much skipped gen 5 and the latter half of gen 4, and had pretty much left the franchise behind, but came back to it when I decided to play Y, and it was worth it, but after ORAS, the next generation is really going to need to impress me to get ME to come back, too.

The lack of post game content/adventure and extremely easy main game is what made me burn out on X/Y.

The last Pokemon game to have me playing obsessively for months was Emerald because it had the best postgame of any pokemon game thus far. (my opinion...perhaps I'm wrong?)

Honestly, not one game's postgame since then has motivated me like Emerald's did. It's funny too because R/S had the shittiest post game--worse than X/Y's even. I'm hoping that ORAS doesn't disappoint, and its postgame follows in the footsteps of Emerald and not Ruby/Sapphire or else I'll get bored real quick.

I played way the hell too much of Emerald, but actually, I think B2W2 have possibly the best postgame content. There is SO MUCH TO DO. Seriously, there are TONS of legendaries to catch, tons of different places to explore, and the region is HUGE.

That being said, the GSC postgame stuff is still potentially the best. I never really got around to playing HG/SS because that was around the time I stopped playing Pokemon (something I regret now, since I grew up with the originals), but I assume they were, for the most part, the same.

Or was that with reference to the new breeding mechanics? Don't get me wrong, a lot of the streamlined features in X/Y are amazing and make raising pokemon a much less tedious task...but where's my adventure? Where's my feeling of accomplishment? I want to do solo things that don't include riding up and down a stretch of road over and over. Zygarde was kinda neat, but that's pretty much all we got. Kiloude is "Metagame: The Town".

Events have gone from "here's this cool new area, go explore it and find the legendary" to "here's your fucking pokemon, now scoot".

Define 'easy'. Pokemon has always been easy to master and power through if you know what you're doing. But after Platinum the developers made specific choices that made the games easier; gym leaders with a maximum of 3 Pokemon, E4 with a maximum of four, infinite TMS, EXP from catching Pokemon, Gen VI's overpowered EXP Share, etc.

I played Blue recently and even though I blasted my way through it, at least I felt like it was due to my own skill, knowledge and preparation.

Worst decision. Should've kept Gen 5's level of gym difficulty and story depth. Referring to B/W, not BW2. Not too deep, but it felt substantial enough to not feel stale.

They even switched up the Champ sequence and made it feel kind of cool.

What makes it sting even more is the message the game constantly smashes into your head about using the Pokemon you like, not the strongest. Then you go to the Battle Spot, and get destroyed, unless your favorites are the best in the game.

This is because gaming's substitute via business are those fucking cell phone games. They are worried if the game is too hard, thought out, and/or slow paced, people will ditch the game, give it bad reviews, and go play Flappy Bird.

Even taking nostalgia out of the equation, the older games seemed harder for two reasons...bad design/coding and less competition.

Branching out from that, Pokemon now exceeds 700 critters. That's a lot for GameFreak to keep track of and continuing following the old formulas, because you know people would have hissy fits if GF changed too much of their games (ie megas).

The bullshit I usually hear of 'I want change but not like what GF has already done' is just whining and entitlement issues. If people want to whine that way, make your own damn game.

Is the answer to make our own Pokemon game? I don't know what Sage is going for (if that's even still alive), but I'm pretty sure it isn't to recapture that feeling of the old-style Pokemon games.

Are Zeta/Omicron any good in that regard? It sorta looked like meme-ridden fanwank rubbish, but I haven't really seen enough of it to properly judge that.
