I'm not gonna lie, I hated megas for a while, but there's just something about mega altaria that resonates with me.
I can't put my finger on it, but I love this fluff-bird/dragon/fairy.

Am I the only one who feels this way? can we have a thread for my soontobe bro?

Also, personally I don't get GF's primary intentions for giving Mega Evolutions to pseudo-legendary Pokémon and Pokémon with a TBS of around 530 and above. Why not give Mega Evolutions to Pokémon like Delcatty (weakest FE evolutionary-line Pokémon) and other, weaker ones like Linoone/Ferret, etc.?

As of now, there are pretty much only three types of "players" currently playing Pokémon. Smogonfags (competitive players only picking "viables"), Karenfags (choosing their favorites) and mixed-competitive player (those choosing "viables" (Übers/OU/goodmons), but puts in some "shitmons" into his/her team, to be a little "nice" to their opponent, and balance it out a bit.

They target popular and iconic mons. Salamence is a mainstay in VGC and one of the most iconic mons of Hoenn, and Altaria was pretty memorable for being a fucking dragon in a flying gym. Lopunny is probably a staff favorite.

I like plenty of Megas, but I was still waiting for my "personal" Mega of choice. Altaria has been an old favorite of mine since Hoenn, but it's simply not able to cut it competitively. Now it was gifted a well-designed, godly-typed Mega with an excellent ability. I can't wait to raise one up. I like that they balanced the cute factor while still maintaining a mystical, majestic look. Yeah, it's a fluffy, friendly Fairy, but it's also a Dragon and will no doubt be a pretty imposing fighter. Altaria has always had some of the best aspects of Pokemon (companionship, battle, and a bit of magic), and Mega Altaria only expands and improves on that.

Scans mentioned boosts to offenses, we will have to see official info and the game itself, but frankly even a slight defensive buff combined with Dragon/Fairy typing will make Megaltaria quite tanky. Especially with Roost. It will prob be capable of Dragon Dance and support/cleric sets (Heal Bell, Cotton Guard, you name it). I predict it will be fairly versatile.

I certainly did. I tried Rock Tomb on my Blaziken, at least attempting some semblance of strategy. Most of my team by that point in the game was frail or type disadvantaged, but it was worth the struggle. Flying types were always my favorites anyway. Though I don't mind Altaria trading it for Fairy.

Even if it didn't get a single boost to its offenses, fairy/dragon is just such a useful defensive typing for checking a lot of different shit in OU that I'm sure it would rise up. And it'll obviously get SOME sort of defense improvement

I hope Attack gets a bit more than Sp. Attack for a boost. If it breaks base 100 DD sets will be pretty sweet considering the power of Pixilate STAB Return. Even minor defense boosts to Altaria's already respectable bulk and will work wonders with that new type, and a little speed would be lovely too.

I always thought Altaria was designed to kill other dragons by looking at its movepool ice beam, Dazzing gleam, draco meteor. So When it became Fairy, it all make sense.

It'd be better off physical in spite of it's glorious special movepool, thanks to Dragon Dance and Return's strength. Plus as a bulky, tanky, Boost and Roost mon it could really do quite nicely. But supposedly both offenses get decent buffs, so who knows.

The pic of it mid MegaEvo on the contest scan shows it better. Looks pretty nice in the model. Think of the poof as being like the "tail feathers" of a peacock, which actually grow from the back above the tail.

It would need to have a very heavy increase in its attack to be at all OP (like +60,) as well as a minimum of +20 speed, and we already know it also gets an increase in its Sp.A.

I really hope they buff its defenses cause Fairy/Dragon is fucking GODLY. I just wish it got a more defensive ability (and no not Fur Coat, defensive mons can be OP: like Levitate or something would have been really good, too.)

Presumably gonna be looking at 20-40 in each attack stat, doubt its more than that, and they may not be even. Bulk should be the next priority, cuz if its bulky enough it can patch its passable base 80 Speed with Dragon Dance (works for Dragonite)

Should be, would be, could be. I kind of agree, but we KNOW that its offensive stats get the biggest boosts according to the info from the scans. I just hope they don't try too hard to make it mixed and miss out on the possible new bulk. Putting Attack between 100 and 120 and Sp. Attack slightly shy of that would allow the rest to go to bulk, which would be acceptably tough enough combined with the typing. Who knows, thye could even remove some speed, but I doubt it.

Great evolutionary line overall. Swablu is a pain in the ass to raise but adorable and now worth the effort. I remember being shocked when my Swablu evolved and started to learn Dragonbreath. I'd seen Altaria but had no idea it was a Dragon-type.

Also the battle it evolved in was the first time I saw Return hit for max damage, with the darkened screen and repeated strikes, which left quite the impression on young me. Rather fitting considering that Pixilate Return will likely be a staple of my new Altaria's moveset.

some thoughts:
1. I'm honestly not sure how M-Lopunny's gonna work out- I always wanted to be able to use an attacking set on it, but I really don't know if the Mega Boost is gonna be enough to help it do that. Also could there have been a better ability to use than Scrappy? I dunno.

2. WHERE'S FLYGON'S MEGA?! Don't get me wrong, much love to Altaria fans, but seriously WHERE'S MEGA FLYGON

Scrappy Normal/Fighting gives it perfect neutral coverage from STABs alone. So it doesn't really need to mess with coverage moves (unless you want to hit something harder) and can use its support movepool (which is really freaking big.)

Mega Flygon is probably coming. GameFreak has a real hard-on right now for giving Megas to NPC's ace mons. Lucia (contest girl) has an Altaria, will no doubt show off the mid-contest Mega Evo feature, possibly even give you the Mega Stone for Altaria...Aarune (secret base guy) has a Flygon, battles you, and is apparently relevant beyond just giving you the TM. I'd be more surprised if Flygon DIDN'T get a Mega now.

It's bulky enough as is. With the typing change alone, not many mons in OU can successfully kill it on the physical side which renders its only counters on the special side(so basically only Clefable, M-Gardevoir, Gengar, Kyu-B(and it doesn't want to switch in since Pixilate Return is a 2HKO), M-Venusaur with sludge bomb, Sylveon, and Togekiss).

I was going to run salamence this run over altaria because I used altaria in RSE and didn't want my ORAS team to be a carbon copy, but now considering the difference in their megas altaria's back on the squad, I'll happily accept the carbon-copy RSE team with a mega of this quality.

Okay fine, Delicatty gets a mega. So its 380 BST goes up to 480- which is still mediocre by fully evolved non-mega standards. Do the Devs now have to give or make up a new busted ability to make this and every other piece of crap viable or do you just want to waste a mega slot on a shitmon?

Huge power happened to suit M-Mawile, and Sableye already had Prankster, but there only some many weaker mons they pull this off with before things get ridiculous.

Do we think it'll be OK? I'm a little concerned about having to share those precious 100 points between both offenses. Altaria's bulk, even as is, combined with Dragon/Fairy typing, will probably be sufficient for bulky boosting or support, but what do you guys think?

Pixilate Return is really quite powerful, hitting 198 damage with STAB and the ability boost. Altaria-M will probably have between 100 and 115 base Attack. Its typing, bulk, and recovery in Roost should allow it plenty of opportunities to set up.
