Yeah,it was used officially for the first time in Gen 5 I think. Before then it was always something like "And this event Pokémon is a different colour!" although the cards referred to them as "Shining Pokémon" for a while.

They fucked it up around late Gen IV or maybe Gen V.

It had been "Alt. color" in Gen III, I don't think it had a particular name in Gen IV... I dunno if maybe the anime fucked it up but I know the cards started calling them "Shining Pokemon" as far back as Gen II so that must've been where it got traction?

First time I remember seeing them called "Shiny" specifically in an (i guess semi official) capacity was in the HGSS Guidebook where it mentions Shiny Pokemon.

before that there wasn't really anything that specifically mentioned it. I think Red Gyarados was always referred to as "Red" and not a Shiny.

"Shining" was used in the TCG.

The term shiny was adopted by TPCi for the Crown Beast event at the very end of Gen IV. Gen V features the term in the Pokedex and it's mentioned by an NPC.

色違い is the video game term, which had a couple different name in English before the fan name "shiny" was made official in gen 5.

光る is the TCG term, which has always been translated as "Shining" in English.

They're not the same term, and have always been treated separately in both Japanese AND English.
