Does anybody sometimes miss the old art style for the games?

Nothing against Ken Sugimori improving in some areas over time, but his old character art seems more, eh, sophisticated? Maybe it's the Shaunaface

ehh it depends. The gen 3 and 4 style is nice but the gen 1 and 2 style is pretty awful.
Also May's redesign is absolutely disgusting but that's more of a design thing than an art thing
The art certainly doesn't help though.

Good thing he got his shit together regarding the Pokemon official art. No more washed out colors and random white spots in the coloring, his old coloring was terrible and annoying beside being lazy.

50/50 about human characters, some are okay some are completely to redesign and not revamp only. Especially Gen1 and Gen2 ones, concepts are nice but the execution is poor sometimes, just take a look on Pokemon Stadium trainers and such, well the current age gap doesn't help him being judged well too, you know 90s and earliest 00s mode and style were bad. Another debatable era was Gen3, it also did have some sameface cases, Glacia with Steven Stone face and such were weird. The last designs from both Ohmura and Sugimori are okay and acceptable and both main characters and support ones rarely fail aside from some outfits, very happy for the npc characters that got an extreme positive improvement.

Were those BW1 beta starter trainers/rivals? Would have approved the blonde girl, but after seeing BW2 Bianca I prefer her the most for being cute, gentle and less goofy, she had a good development in improved both look so it can match her more mature character.

If I recall, these characters were in the Reshiram/Zekrom/Victini movie. The blonde had Serperior, the middle dude had Emboar, and the last guy had Samurott.

Gen4 sure was a good era for character designs and redesigns, can't be said the same of the Pokemon, however not all of the latter were that bad. Gen5 nailed it and has both failed and achieved some interesting and good looking characters. Gen6 mostly had success in NPCs and minor support characters like Dexio and Sina, Gym Leaders and Elite4 needed a little more work and especially good ingame character development to be at least remembered for their person if not for their look, this lack was the main drawback, otherwise they would have been decently completed.

I don't remember these two movies so well, would have said the characters were different, as cotd / special themed npc they are acceptable. Anime does rarely disappoint with the cotd looks.

Anyone knows who was the concept artist of Pokemon: Origins? I still wish the guy at the Pewter Gym was the actual design of a grown up Youngster or Ace Trainer in some game. The style itself in general was very pleasing.
