Make sure you're at least 10 levels above Surge and Erika. The rest of the game will be a breeze after that.

this is why i bought a pelican brain boy so i can edit the pokemon's stats
when i won a badge, i lowered my pokemon's level by 5

I did a Squirtle only run in LG (squirtle, as in not blastoise). I was lvl 81 and still had to use potions and X spatk to barely even get through the E4
