I quite violently hated the rivals this gen, for one thing having 4 of them detracts from your bonds with your Pokemon, especially when you see these kids so often. God, the handholding, a whole 2 steps of freedom from Vaniville to Aquacorde before they're sprung on you. The other 3 are just irritating, like the thing as the Pokeball Factory, where you and Serena actually give a shit and there's some dumb subplot about Trevor and Tierno having to save Shauna from some Flare grunt, Christ. If they have to write them out of half the "cutscenes", then surely they're just dead weight. And on the flipside, in the nature trail where the lot of you meet up, the other 3 are quite pleased to see you, whereas Serena is such a miserable cunt, even before you battle her. But fuck, that pose where she pinches her forehead, it haunts me.
So, yeah they're all as bad as each other. They even make Bianca and Hugh look good. Please bring back Gary/Silver-esque rivals.
