That's only 8 more than Sylveon has and Audino has worse overall defenses at base.

Diancie has STAB Fairy/better version of Stone Edge and a fuckton of setup potential in dual screens and a 50% chance to raise its defense using diamond storm

Altaria is probably going to be the best offensively on Dragon Dance+Pixelate Return+Earthquake alone.

It all depends on how they actually turn out. We can speculate forever, but Altaria might have like half of its mega boost wasted on a stat it'd never use. Audino might become a blissey-tier tank with boosted defenses or offensive presence. Diancie might get bullied and have its defenses lowered exactly enough for CB Scizor to OHKO it with bullet punch and have it never see the light of day.

Considering its getting drops in defensive stats i wouldn't count on it being THAT defensive. Also it's movepool is shallow

It will probably play a lot like how Wigglytuff would if it was more competent in battle. Never before has a MEvo been usable as a general cleric so this could be interesting

What people don't realize is that Shell Armor and the great increase in defense means you can Calm Mind all day though I honestly would have preferred Unaware

While diancie does lead in def/sdef and offense the rock typing is a big hindrance and the low hp doesn't help, combined with a lack of reliable recovery it will suffer.

Audino going the fairy/normal route could come up big with wish/103 base, especially if they give it a good lump of defense/sdef but to get a decent bulk of def/sdef it will likely continue having supbar offensive capabilites

Altaria with great typing/reliable recovery and some already decent bulk combined with shit like cotton guard could come up big, while it has some low offensive stats it is likely they will get a bit of a buff and combined with pixilate it's offense would likely be decent.

Altaria looks like it's gonna be running a tank set at best and a sweeper set likely won't be very useful defensively.

Diancie's trading away its shit speed and huge defenses, but keeping the ground, water, and steel weaknesses.

Audino doesn't look any more useful than anything else defensively. Ghost isn't that dominant when Gengar's banned and Aegislash is steel anyway if it goes back to OU for ORAS, so its only upside in being part normal is sort of meh. Then now it's neutral to fighting.

uh, base diancie has 50 speed while altaria has 80. I don't think speed will be a big focus on its mega

Altaria is at least fortunate that with the stated boosts none of its stats will really be "wasted." Whatever amount they choose for the "big boosts" to Attack and Sp.Attack, they will probably still end up between 100-120 range which is plenty good for a defensive or tank mon. Attack can be boosted further by Dragon Dance, while Sp.Attack has Hyper Voice to hit through Subs or attack multiple opponents in Doubles. Combine that with a nice offensive ability, natural bulk, useful typing for offense and defense, good recovery and cleric moves, and Mega Altaria looks to be sitting pretty.

Let's not get crazy. Boomburst as a tutor would be insane. The only reason Altaria has ANY chance of really getting it is because it is found in the Egg Group multiple times (Noivern, Chatot, Swellow). Combine that with its wide array of sound moves like Sing, Perish Song, and Hyper Voice, as well as its classification as the Humming Pokemon and supposed "beautiful voice"...maybe. Just maybe.

Personally I'd love it but I don't want to be the next Sap Sipper Swampert or ExtremeSpeed Salamence jerk, so I'm not getting my hopes up. It'd certainly be an awesome buff to one of my old favorites.

Also it wouldn't be the first time a move got added via breeding or something between games (Bullet Punch Scizor, Head Smash Aggron, Brave Bird Honchkrow), and many Megas got moves specifically to abuse their new type or ability.

Also Altaria and Audino are definitely the best of the trio, with Audino slightly raising in usage but not that much, Altaria is most likely a new vital Pokemon for stall teams and pivot like for offensive ones.
Diancie is that Pokemon you should never use and waste your mega slot on, having poor HP and high defensive stats is just bad, as bad as Shuckle but Shuckle at least has a better defensive move to abuse and Infestation that deals annoying and small yet effective damage. Diancie also doesn't have any recovery move anda as it isn't enough has lot of common and extreme weaknesses, unless it doesn't receive Wish or Pain Split this somehow of a mascot will at best have enough usage on both Battle Spot and competitive simulators to be considered a solid RU/LU, but with the new input of mega evolutions and last Pokemon species to be revealed as well as the potential tutors changing and finally completing and finishing the Gen6 official meta it may lose usage even there.

There's really nothing in terms of competitive scene Diancie can do better than other Pokemon that can perform better either a general defensive role or an offensive one.

Altaria is definitely the winner here.

As for speculations I wish Audino will be able to receive Softoboiled via egg and Recover through move relearner. At least Wish event for Diancie and Pain Split from tutors.

At 100 base offenses already and the mega being confirmed to shed defense stats, that means over 100+ stats going into offenses and speed.

With that you have a 95% accurate stone edge that boosts defense and Fairy coverage existing in general.
Assuming like, +50 to attack stats since its new role is supposed to be a glass cannon so it should be shedding a ton of defense, I'd call that far from useless.

If we really don't want to use the term useless, than something like average and a Pokemon that needs lot of support and teambuilding around to be used is what Diancie / Mega Diancie appears to be.

Some Pokemon are still not so viable even if they are able to revenge kill or completely counter a specific common and well know high tier threat, but beside being limited to this role there are always better choices and substitutes.

And they all do fine because offensively Fairy is stupid strong. Hell, diamond storm even hits fire and poison for neutral or better.
Diancie as it is is pretty bad, yeah, but the fact that mega diancie is going to be entirely different from the original diancie is a sort of important point.

A bunch of teams don't even use a mega anyway. Tossing Diancie in there as a psuedo-aegislash being able to set up with defenses and mega to attack shouldn't be that hard at all.

Even going back to lost defenses, 50 from each putting Diancie at 50/100/100 gives you 200 extra points to distribute to 100/100/50 offenses and speed.

Mawile / Mega Mawile has a good coverage as in necessary one, so does Sylveon with Shadow Ball, Psyshock, HyperVoice / Moonblast, Azumarill and Altaria / Mega Altaria also has access to a mixed coverage and durability.

Klefki doesn't care about coverage due to its main role, Aromatisse has limited movepool but can rely on recovery and can't be taunted. Wigglytuff being another Gen1 Pokemon and especially a normal type one is blessed with the godlike coverage movepool so is Granbull, Slurpuff is a good candidate for elemental punches while its special set is already good.
Dedenne, Florges and Mr.Mime don't have either coverage or need of it due to their main roles.

Yeah, the Puffs are stacked. 103 isn't "crazy" like I said in OP but combined with the defensive boosts of the Mega it'll be rather bulky. Definitely gonna have staying power if nothing else.
