Sure, we might not have watched them battle the Sages, but what I really loved about this scene, and about Gen V in general, is that the Gym Leaders are actual people with actual jobs and lives. Skyla is a pilot, Drayden is a mayor, Burgh is an artist, etc. Pretty much all of them were encountered outside of their Gyms and some helped you track down or defeat Team Plasm, for instance. Whereas most of the other Gym Leaders in the other generations were just roadblocks who just stayed cooped up in their Gyms. Sometimes you'd forget all about them right after their battle, like Ramos of Gen VI...
Anyways, I loved this moment and I loved Gen V.
