You can make back ups of saves so yeah you can use that to clone I guess and you can also use it to get events whenever

One edit to make a pokemon shiny. To clone an entire box? You have to backup your file, upload to bank, restore file, trasnfer from bank to file, backup new file, and repeat. It's more time consuming than anything.

Not really. Think about it like this. You clone 1 at a time, then 2, then 4, then 8, then 16, then 32, and then 64 (so on and so on) every time you restore. Not going to lie it takes an eternity to get the first couple, but I can now make 4 boxes of diancie within 30 seconds at any time.
