I honestly think that ghost type moves were physical from gen 1 to counter alakazam, because while you could never take it down with a special attack, a physical attack would destroy it.

that being said, psychic was immune to ghost in gen 1 (glitch? GAMEFREAK stupidity? we'll never know) so yeah

Game Freak is a bunch of idiots and you should come to expect shit like this from them.
In generation 3, Dark and Water moves were special only.
Knowing this, gamefreak introduced Sharpedo and Crawdaunt, 2 water/dark types that have 120 base attack.

Always found it funny that Haunter was touted in the anime as the only way to beat Sabrina yet Kadabra would destroy it without second thought in the games.

You act like Alakazam was some mewtwo-tier force in Gen 1. It doesn't even guarantee a 2KO against common stuff like Persian or Tauros who 2KO it in response. It couldn't do anything to Chansey and even stuff like Electrode could deal with Alakazam easily.

seriously, the phys/special split is the greatest contribution that Gen 4 has made to the series, possibly one of the biggest additions to the series as a whole, and its probably the only reason why I can say its the SECOND worst gen above gen 2

You realize you're completely wrong, right?

The Gen IV change was that moves were Physical or Special on a move by move basis rather than an entire type's being Physical or Special.

E.g. In Gen I all water attacks were special. In Gen IV, some water attacks (such as Waterfall) became physical.

Nah, it was Persian. I've gone through virtually every Azure Heights thread, and it was agreed that Persian's speed made it a more viable threat.

Persian appeared on more top players' teams than Tauros did, as well.

Normal is often overlooked in favour of Psychic, but them norms heavily shaped the meta of the time just as much.

A big reason being the only good fighting move was seismic toss, and most fighters were scared of the psychics. You'd see shit like toss on a Chsney.

I wonder how many pokemon got fucked over by gen 4. The only one I know that got screwed by that split was Sceptile because gamefreak actually gave it a decent special attack and movepool to go with its typing. Then the split happened and all of its special moves became physical and fucked it up.

Tauros has a high physical attack and good defences, with very few good fighting types to counter him, while Persian used the fact that critical hit chance in the first gen was based on speed, meaning that a move like slash would almost always crit.

Just going off of memory, I think more Pokemon got fucked by the Special Atk/Def split,than they did the Physical/Special split. So many mons with great special bulk lost it in order to keep their high attacks.

Doesn't answer your question, but it's something to think about.

Well theres also:
-Swellow-No more Guts boosted HP Fighting/Ground to get past stuff that resisted it's STABs
-Every special attacker that relied on the elemental punches for coverage (Alakazam and Gardevoir for ex)

Gengar was between. It can now use it's STABs properly in exchange of losing the coverage Fire and Ice Punch offered, but was still a top tier threat.

Dragon Claw wasn't introduced until Gen III, while Outrage was only available to Rayquaza and the Dratini, Charmander, and Larvitar families prior to Gen IV. For the first two generations, all three of the most common Dragon-type moves were Special.
