Honestly, Serena is just trying way too hard to be polite and formal that it seems engineered on her part. Calem is more laid back, honest and when he loses, he sees it as a opportunity to improve. Serena is a real downer, even compared to Calem. Her reaction to losing is way more intense and it's why I don't like battling her. I'm her Gary Oak.

Calem is a worse shit because he actually whines about you getting to battle Sycamore in his lab, while Serena's just blandly ecstatic about the concept of battling. Her blandness is definitely nerve-wracking but Calem's butthurt implications always annoyed me more.

You're more like their Gen I rival rather than the friendly neighbour protagonist anyway. They're always trying harder and giving themselves stupid pep talks every time you step on them, but you're always there, at every corner, ready to slowly ruin their teenage years.
