That is just because x comes before y in the alphabet. Everything dealing with Y is red. The 3DS package, the pokemon color scheme, the cover. Y is the "red" version.

the "red" version doesnt refer to the color, it refers to being the first you say. diamond is the red version of gen IV as you say "diamond and pearl" not "pearl and diamond" even though dialga is blue not red

this is how to determine version color:

is a mascot a fire type? red version and other is blue
is a mascot water type? blue version and other is red
ex: palkia is water type so pearl is blue, white dragon is fire type so White is red

if neither mascot is either type then you go by color:
ex: Xerneas is blue, X is blue

I don't get why people say that Y version is worse. I mean, it has Heracross, Dragalge, Cloyster, Tyranitar and the 1st gen fossils, which are arguably the best overall (although Tyrantrum is best fossil poke by a long shot).

What's so bad about Y /vp/?

Kabutops is easily the best fossil if you count rain teams. Tyrantrum has a lot of raw power, but not a lot of synergy with certain playstyles.
