If that artist was just doing something not so serious then I have not qualms with them, but if we're actually talking about something imaginative or creative, an artist could have made hieroglyphs depicting what an Egyptian-like civilization might have drawn, which would not include characters of a modern time subway adventure.
Random =/= creativity. If I wanted to draw fanart of Spheal, there are limitless venues for creativity, but if I decided to just draw it in outer space and it wasn't just something silly, then people have every right to question it.
