Gen 4 and 5 had a lot of great additions to the series and were kinda revolutionary to the entire franchise. Gen 5 brought better graphics in the game (with some pretty nice cut scenes + lots of environments) and Gen 4 brought the physical/special split as well as actual challenge to the games.
Gen 3 and 6 brought a lot of new things to the games (XY brought better interactivity and RSE brought more complex mechanics to add on to the game), but they also left out a LOT of things previous games had which made them seem pretty mediocre.
Gen 2 is only better than Gen 1 because of being a generally larger game with something to do after the main game and some type balances. Gen 1 has a nice non linear map, but, is shit in everything else
