Play some matches, see what works and what doesn't work. What strategies and pokemon did you have problems countering? Maybe swap out a team member, or change their move set. Smogon's sets are not the be all end all, they should be seen as guidelines to get started with.
To get used to the actual gameplay, random battles are a good idea. They'll help you get used to the various pokemon you can face, and how to predict and switch and all that.
