well vp,it is time.
time to join you guys.
I haven't played pokemon since diamond and pearl came out 7 years ago.
this week i decided to blow my tax return on 3dsxl and pokemon x.
best idea ever.im hooked again like i was still 12,but know i know that there is more then i though to this,oh so much more.
so i come to you guys.
how does an old johto player that never got past the one pokemon beatstick kiddie park tactic and still knows completely nothing at all past typing advantages returning for the first time in 7 years get truly good and become the grass type master always wanted to be?

Grass is a pretty hard type to run if you're serious. But definitely the best first step is to learn all the typings. I know, it's the most simple advice and everyone gives, but for good reasons, it's shit you need to get down.

EVs are the stats you see in super training. You can put 252 EVs into a stat with a max of 512 EVs going to a pokemon. For every 4 EVs, the stat increases by 1 point. Usually you want these to be focused on something a pokemon is already good at (Usually split as physical defense, special defense, physical offence, and special offence). Super training allows you to increase targeted stats. Also every pokemon you defeat earns you a different type and amount of EV, depending on the pokemon.

If you wanna get into this the best way to start is with the super training mini game. To start just max two stats that work the best on the pokemon you're training, and put the last bit in either hp, def or spdef, you'll always have a teeny bit extra.

Allows you to selectively increase certain stats. For example, increase a Pokemon's Attack, at the expense of other stats. Pointless in-game, vital for competitive battling.

You don't need EVs for the game content, don't worry about it. You can finish the game with whatever you want, they aren't that hard.

Still, if you wanna go the safe way, just keep a balance team, not repeating types. Also I know you said you learned the typings except for fairy, but it's not just that, it's not just adding firy to the mix. Some types got changes when Fairy got added, so go and learn a type chart. As long as you know the chart, you're good to go.

Weak to Poison and Steel. It's the type of being cute but fickle. Like Dark, but less hostile; like Normal, but more arcane.

Breloom isn't available until the postgame - good taste, by the way - but you can catch a Ferroseed just before the third gym. Actually, that might be a good choice for a steel-type.

Grass-type designs have only gotten better as time goes on. It's a good type to love.

Why you ackin' so cray-cray? 4 EVs increase the stat by 1... at level 100. At level 33, you need 12 EVs for the same effect; at level 50, you need 8.

Also, OP, don't get overwhelmed by EVs (which stand for Effort Values, by the way.) They've always been in the game, and if you don't want to worry about them now, you don't have to. Unless you want to get into competitive play.

I've always loved Grass even though it's kind of a shit type.

Mega Venusaur and Ferrothorn are really the most popular Grass types at the moment and they're usually better defensively.

For anyone interested in playing with Grass types, I've made a Grass monotype team that is pretty good. It still has trouble with Charizard X, but he's gonna get banned it's pretty hard to take out with Grass types regardless if you don't run like 2 checks.

Essentially, it's a defensive balanced singles team. 2 physical + special defensive Pokemon (called "walls"), and a fast physical and special attacker.

The goal is usually lead with Breloom and use Spore on something to force your opponent to switch out. From there you can wear down your opponent with your walls until the more offensive teammates can clean up all remaining Pokemon.
